To increase your chances considerably of surviving the dangerous world of Borderlands 3 you will want to obtain a vehicle as soon as possible. These death machines will enable you to easily traverse any planet and deal with the enemies you encounter along your way. Our How to Unlock Vehicles guide will tell you everything you need to know about how to get and customise them.
When you begin Borderlands 3 all the vehicles are locked, to access them you will need to assist Ellie in the 'Cult Following' main story mission. To unlock your first vehicle Ellie will order you to hijack a bandit vehicle from the cultists. Once you have the vehicle you need to take it to the nearest Catch-A-Ride where you will be rewarded with the Outrunner.
Initally you will only have access to the Outrunner but other vehicles will become available as you progress through the campaign completing missions (see below). Vehicle upgrades such as weapons and armour can be acquired via the main story, side quests, or through exploration.
Outrunner
Unlocked in 'Cult Following' mission.
Technical
Unlocked in 'Taking Flight' mission.
Cyclone
Unlocked in 'Hostile Takeover' mission.
To customise your vehicle's loadout and paint job you need to visit a Catch-A-Ride staion and interact with the menu. Catch-A-Ride stations are terminals that provide transportation in the form of different types of Digistructed vehicles, they are unlocked after completing the story mission 'Cult Following' and will allow you to save up to three customised vehicle loadouts. Vehicle parts that you have collected are displayed in Ellie's garage in Sanctuary III and it is there that you will be able to see how they modify your vehicle. Visiting the garage will also enable you to see what parts you have yet to acquire for your vehicle.
