There are five tiers of weapons in Borderlands 3; Common (White), Uncommon (Green), Rare (Blue), Very Rare (Purple), and Legendary (Orange). Once you reach the Endgame content there is a separate category within the higher-tier weapons called 'Annointed'. Check out our Anointed Weapons Guide to find out everything you need to know about them.
In Borderlands 3 a weapon that has been Annointed means it has a special benefit or effect when/after you use an Action Skill, or in some instances another character/action. Annointed weapons become available when you reach the Endgame modes towards the end of the campaign. The only way to get them early is to purchase them for Eridium at Crazy Earl's Veteran Store vending machine on the bottom deck of your ship, Sanctuary or by finding them in the Endgame modes through a chest during Proving games, Mayhem-Mode, and Circle of Slaughter. It is wothwhile trying to get these Annointed weapons as they will help you for the final boss.
Keep in mind some Annointed weapons are specific to a certain class or character and instead of just saying 'Annointed' in the description will say 'Anointed Gunner', 'Anointed Siren', 'Anointed Operative', or 'Anointed Beastmaster'. Annointed weapons that say 'Annointed' and nothing else will give buff to any active skill of the character who equips it. Except for their unique perks which impact the characters abilities in certain ways the weapons themselves are the same as their standard counterparts. Many of the character-specific Anointed weapons will activate their special effect only upon a specific Action Skill. For example, the legendary sniper rifle, Expert Firestorm will only increase weapon damage by 100% for a brief duration after using an Action Skill.
