Just Cause 3 is an open world, third-person action-adventure game which gives players freedom to explore the fictional Mediterranean island of Medici, Rico's homeland. According to Wikipedia, the map size is similar to Just Cause 2. The "volumetric terrain" is also increased, allowing players to explore caverns and scale buildings more efficiently. Medici is composed of five major biomes or regions, each with its own unique landscapes.

The series' signature equipment, the grappling hook and parachute, returns to the game with considerable improvements. The grappling hook can now tether two different objects (or people) then retract the tethered line remotely, causing the objects to smash to each other. The parachute is even more stable, allowing you to shoot while airborne. The Wingsuit has been added to the permanent traversal tools in Rico's arsenal. This allows players to glide quickly, which they can freely alternate with using grappling hooks or deploying their chutes.

Destruction and mayhem has been the series' staple so in Just Cause 3, players are given several different options in destroying stuff. For example, the grappling hook's tethering feature can allow players to hook up an explosive barrel to a vehicle and reel them in together for a chaotic finish. Bridges and statues can be blown up with several methods. Unlike in other games, JC3 players are given access to infinite C4, giving them easy access to cause explosive destruction whenever they want.

The game doesn't have a cooperative or competitive multiplayer mode. Instead, its online feature is having an asynchronous leaderboards where players can compete for better rankings in their own games.
