Gotta Catch 'Em All? Top 10 Pokedex Strategies

01. GlobalLink / Internet Trades

The Pokemon Global Link is the most recent incarnation of the International online Pokemon Trading System. In June 2009 Nintendo activated the connectivity scheme to allow for Internet-based trades and for Trainers to be able to receive gift Pokemon and/or e-Cards and Wondercards via that scheme.

It is accessible via the current generation games, and allows Trainers from all over the world to seek out the Pokemon that they want to trade for, or post the ones that they want to trade away, and in the process make new friends!

Unfortunately there are some rules and protocols that the GTS uses that you cannot get around - as in addition to needing to know the name of the Pokemon you want to trade for, you also have to have in your Pokedex an entry for that Pokemon.

It is sort of a Catch-22 in that you are only allowed to trade for Pokemon that you have actually seen or battled with. That is largely why many Trainers will seek to obtain entries via “Pokedex Stuffing” which we covered earlier.

A Typical Trade Session

When you search for a Pokemon to trade you are presented, based on your search criteria, every Pokemon from all over the world that matches it.

In the language of the Trainer who has posted their Pokemon for trade you will be able to see the Pokemon Name/Type and Level, any held item, the Pokemon that the Trainer wants in exchange (with Gender and Level) in the top screen of your device along with an image of the Pokemon in uestion.

In the bottom screen of your device you will see the name of the Trainer offering the trade, and their registered home town and country.

When posting a Trade Request you will deposit the Pokemon you want to trade, and you will indicate the stats for the one you want to trade it for. That can be everything from ANY Pokemon and ANY Level, or you specify the exact Pokemon you want by Name, Level Range, Gender, and you can even include a brief message if you like.

Global Link Promotions

In addition to serving as the primary Pokemon Trades infrastructure for Pokemon Trainers all over the world, the Global Trade System (GTS for short) also functions as one-half of the combined Event Pokemon / Holiday Pokemon / and Gift Pokemon Network.

The wizards at Nintendo and GameFreak use the GTS combined with the traditional menu button based distribution network to offer special Pokemon as promotional and gift Pokemon to the world Poke Trainer communities.

In addition to offering them via GTS players can also obtain any offered gift or promotional Pokemon by accessing the traditional menu following the path: POWER ON > LOAD GAME > MYSTERY GIFT > RECEIVE GIFT > VIA INTERNET or alternately VIA CODE if you have a code for a gift Pokemon or Wondercard...

The Stuffing Path?

While Catch-22 situations are never fun, the world of Pokemon is a What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get kind of place, and it has been our experience that usually the efforts that you put into the game end up paying dividends.

Stuffing is not a lot of fun but, if you get lucky in your Online Search for a Stuffing partner you may get very lucky and find a Trainer who has everything you need while you have something that they need. Best kind of relationship!

Ultimately the GTS - like most of the rest of the social side of he games - is proof that a good and hard-working Trainer will get out of the game more than what they put in! Proof that no effort is worthless or too small.

And hey, there is probably a medal in it somewhere for completing the Pokedex - and we know for sure that there is a diploma or two in it as well. So hey! Enjoy!

Wrapping It All Up

Which combination of strategies do you use? Did we miss one? Do you think that the order of precedence in our list is wrong? Please feel invited to share and even more welcome to add any strategies or tactics that we failed to mention in each strategy - because the Pokemon Trainers who are a big part of the SuperCheats Community will appreciate that very much!

When you comment on this (or any other) feature article, please keep your reply on-subject and please refrain from drive-by commenting (those being brief comments that offer judgment as criticism without also offering constructive alternative strategy)/

We are always happy to be corrected when we get it wrong, and are always very happy to learn new strategies and information about the games we play and how to best play them, so please do share!
