Gotta Catch 'Em All? Top 10 Pokedex Strategies

02. 'Local' Events and Special Mystery Gifts

One of the oldest and best known paths to obtaining rare, legendary, and hard to get Pokemon has always been the “Local” special events that are sponsored by both Nintendo and GameFreak every year.

Oh yes, they happen - but of course you have to know about them in advance in order to make use of them (we will get to that in a moment).

First some details for trainers who are new to the world of Pokemon and so are unaware of the details for this special event and reliable source for special Pokemon...

Event Pokemon

Most often referred to as “Event Pokemon” these are either really Rare Pokemon, Mythical Pokemon, or Legendary Pokemon, or they are Pokemon who either have special moves or a special item that is related to the event at which they are distributed.

Examples of Event Pokemon spanning all of the generations include the following:

Gen-1: Mew.

Gen-2: Celebi and Mew.

Gen-3: Celebi, Deoxys, Ho-Oh, Jirachi, Luigi, and Mew..

Gen-4: Arceus, Celebi, Darkrai, Deoxys, Jirachi, Manaphy, Mew, Phione, and Shaymin.

Gen-5: Arceus, Darkrai, Deoxys, Genesect, Jirachi, Keldeo, Meloetta, Shaymin, and Victini.

Gen-6: Arceus, Celebi, Diancie - Darkrai, Jirachi, Keldeo, Shaymin, Victini, Vivillon (Fancy Pattern), and Vivillon (Poke Ball Pattern).

These special events are, for the most part, official promotional events that are either sponsored by GameFreak or Nintendo (or both) or are held in their names.

In the past these have included movie premieres for one of the Pokemon movies, video game expos, and special distribution events that are specific to a large retailer such as Toys 'R Us or GameStop (we have obtained Event Pokemon at both).

Other Event locations have included amusement parks, and annual regional, national, and international Pokemon World Championship Tourney Events.

Finally there is the single most frequent location of them all - a real-world Pokemon Center - and yes, Ash, they do exist.

Of course you sort of have to either be lucky enough to live in or near the city in which they are located, or have parents or a significant other who does not balk at the idea that a little mini-holiday to New York or Tokyo to get that Legendary that is still stubbornly missing from your 'Dex is a good idea!

For the record and officially there are a total of nine (9) Pokemon Centers and five (5) Pokemon Stores that have regular distribution events. It is also very common for these events to be mirrored at GameStop and/or Toys 'R Us in North America, Game in the UK, and other retail establishments all over the world.

Pokemon Centers are an incredible treat to visit, and can be found in Japan in the cities of Fukuoka, Nagoya, Osaka, Sapporo, Tohoku, Mega Tokyo, Tokyo Bay, and Yokohama. In the United States there is only one (1) Pokemon Center - it is located in New York City.

In addition to Pokemon Centers there are smaller Pokemon Stores that mostly sell collectible Poke-Crack but also host the Event Pokemon too. These can be found in Japan in Amu Plaza Kagoshima, Kansai Airport, New Chitose, and Tokyo Station if you are between trains. In the USA you can find them in Northgate Mall in Seattle, Washington, and the Tacoma Mall in Tacoma, Washington.

Older lists or articles may mention Pokemon Centers or Stores in Osaka, Japan, or the mysterious Alderwood Mall in Lynnwood, Washington USA. Those actually were real but they have closed down and no longer exist.

You may also see a trainer speak of an Event Pokemon that they obtained in Japan at Chūbu Centrair International Airport, Tokyo Character Street, or the Haneda International Airport International Terminal. In Paris, France they might have had their joyful day at the Paris Pokemon Center.

They were not fibbing mind you, but as all of those were strictly temporary Pokemon Centers - not permanent ones - and they, too, are now gone.

And the Adventure Continues!

Providing a list of all of the Pokemon that have been distributed via the Events would require a book - but to help boost your spirits and show you that this is an ongoing good thing you can get in on yourself, here is a selection of them that were distributed in JUST 2015!

Darkrai -- January 14 to 18, 2015 at the Movie Premiere for Diancie and the Cocoon of Destruction.

Pikachu -- January 9 to February 28, 2015 in Shibuya, Japan at the Pokemon Cafe for Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.

Shiny Rayquaza -- January 18 to February 8, 2015 at the Winter 2015 World Hobby Fair.

To learn when -- and where -- the next Event Pokemon distribution will happen your best place to look - and you should check it weekly - is Pokemon.com or the official site for the game version you are playing as your main. Once there be sure to click the Video Games Tab, then page down to the News Section.
