Gotta Catch 'Em All? Top 10 Pokedex Strategies

09. Pokemon Transfers

As noted in the Introduction segment, a means was created starting with Gen-3 to permit serious trainers to transfer Pokemon from generation-to-generation - a very important and useful tool for big time fans for a number of reasons.

Just remember that you are moving Pokemon forward to the next gen, but you can NOT move them back. So do not transfer any that you do not want to permanently move to the next generation of the games, right?

Being able to transfer - and please note that we mean TRANSFER and not trade - Pokemon from gen to gen is crucial due to the Legendary Pokemon that are part of each generation.

It is highly unlikely that Nintendo will hold special events to re-release the entire collection of Legendary from previous gens - though they HAVE opted to hold distribution events for special Legendary Pokemon in the past.

By allowing the player to transfer Pokemon from generation-to-generation GameFreak finally inserted the single most important tool in the game series in terms of actually being able to complete the Pokedex for each new gen, in fact this is really the mechanism that actually made completion of the Pokedex possible.

Generation 3 Transfers: This was the first attempt by GameFreak / Nintendo to create a transfer system and so while it is relatively crude and basic, it did get the job done and that was the important thing.

The transfer process requires a Nintendo DS that has both the DS and GBA card ports on it.

The transfer scheme is accomplished using a very special area in all five of the Gen-4 games called the Pal Park - a sort of Pokemon Nature Preserve in which, under certain conditions, the player could capture Pokemon that were transferred in from Generation 3 games.

Located at the east end of Route 221 in the Sinnoh Region, the Pal Park replaces the Fuchsia City Safari Zone for the games that take place in the Kanto Region.

To activate and use the Pal Park the player needs to have completed the Regional Dex and unlocked the National Dex first. In Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, transfers per day is limited to one six-Pokemon-set per 24 hour period for each GBA cartridge - there are no such restrictions for HeartGold or SoulSilver.

Generation 4 Transfers: To move Pokemon from Generation 4 to Generation 5 requires you to have two handheld consoles - either DS or 3DS will work.

In place of the Pal Park from the previous gen, this time around the process is made into a mini-game that uses the Poke Transfer Labs on Route 15 in Unova that are administered by Professor Andrew Park.

The Lab can only be accessed after the player has obtained their National Pokedex, at which point they can select the Pokemon to be transferred and then, with the two systems connected, activate the mini-game to complete the transfers.

The mini-game consists of a shooting-gallery-like space in which the Pokemon hop and jump from cover-to-cover while the player tries to capture them with a Pokeball Launcher. The game is actually scored, so it really is a mini-game as well as being a scheme for moving Pokemon from the previous gen.

Generation 5 Transfers: Moving Pokemon from Generation 5 to Generation 6 is probably the easiest of all because it is accomplished using the new apps that are now available via the Nintendo 3DS Store on your device. The apps are called Poke Transporter and Pokemon Bank.

Pokemon Bank is actually the app that allows players to store Pokemon from X and Y in the cloud - it has a capacity of 3,000 Pokemon and offers a service similar to that of Pokemon Box for Ruby and Sapphire.

Pokemon Bank is not used to transfer Pokemon from the previous generation per se, but as Poke Transfer - the app that IS used for that purpose - requires that Pokemon Bank be installed on the system, the distinction is academic.

Poke Transporter allows you to move all of the Pokemon from Box 1 on your Gen-5 game to the Pokemon Bank App on your 3DS, up to 30 Pokemon at a go. Once they have been transferred you can then use Pokemon Bank to move them into X or Y.

Note that Pokemon Bank, while free to download, requires payment of an annual subscription fee of $4.99 US and the Bank app works for all Gen-6 games (meaning Pokemon X&Y as well as Alpha and Omega.

Using Poke Transporter you can move Pokemon from Black and White and Black 2 and White 2 to Pokemon Bank, after which you can then move them from the Bank to X and Y as well as Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.

Note: The generation noted includes any previous generation Pokemon already moved into the gen you are transferring from. It's an inclusive process.

Pokemon Transfers comes in at Number 9 on our countdown specifically because it is the second step both in tech and popularity for trainers everywhere - so where else could it have fallen?
