Pallet Town: The Adventure Begins
As Professor Oak will tell you, welcome to the wonderful world of Pokemon! Your adventure is just beginning!
And since your journey is just starting, you'll quickly find your home town, though where it all begins, is pretty insignificant. There are a few houses in small little Pallet, mainly yours and your soon to be Rival's, along with the Pokemon Lab.
Your mother is a sweet heart and will tell you to get on your way to the Professor, and will even heal your Pokemon later in the game when ever you should return home.
Unfortunately, you can't find Professor Oak until you try to leaving the town to the north and attempting to go into Wild Grasses without a Pokemon of your own. Oak will appear out of nowhere and escort you personally to the Lab.
Once there, after a bit of talk, you will meet his grandson, your Rival, and the two of you will be allowed to select your Starter Pokemon. You have the privilege, or so you think, of choosing first.
You have three options for your Starter Pokemon (All Will Be At Level 5):
Bulbasaur - The only dual-type Pokemon in its first evolutionary stage, being a Grass-Poison Pokemon. This Pokemon has forever been considered as the easy choice for the game, since it has the typing advantage for the first number of Pokemon Gyms.
Charmander - A Fire Type Pokemon that evolves into one of the most iconic Pokemon ever. It's considered to be the Pokemon for you if you like a challenge, since the first couple of Pokemon Gyms will put you at a disadvantage where typing is concerned.
Squirtle - A Water Type Pokemon that evolves into another greatly remembered Pokemon. It has some advantages and disadvantages where all the gyms are concerned, but could come in handy near the end of your adventure.
Whichever Pokemon you choose will be fine, since it's possible to win the game with any other them. Plus, you'll sort of be in the hole to begin with since your Rival will choose second and will always pick the Pokemon that has a typing advantage over you. If you pick Bulbasaur, he'll pick Charmander; Charmander, and he'll pick Squirtle, and Bulbasaur if you pick Squirtle.
Immediately after both of your get your Pokemon, your Rival will challenge you to your first Pokemon Battle. Since both of your Pokemon are at Level 5, and have neutral moves to begin with, the battle can go either way. Win the battle, you Pokemon will Level Up.
From there, the two of you go your separate ways, both beginning by heading to the route just north of the town, the same you tried going into before Oak came to your rescue.
