How important is zack in this game?

I'll tell you what I know:
Zack is originally from Gongaga. He joined SOLDIER ten years ago (ten years beofer the time this game is set in I mean). Five years ago he was the member of SOLDIER that went to Nibelheim, not Cloud. Cloud was one of the two troops that accompanied Sephiroth and Zack (the troop that didn't disappear on Mt. Nibel). Cloud told everyone he was from SOLDIER and told all the stories of his friend Zack but he pretended to be Zack in the story, not Zack was in them himself. Zack was Aeris' first boyfriend. Five years ago Zack couldn't beat Sephiroth but Cloud did anyway.

Zack and Cloud escaped from captivity in the Shinra Mansion and headed towards Midgar. On a cliff outside of Midgar some Shinra troops found them. Zack tried to fight them off (Cloud was almost dead because of starvation and all that stuff) but he got killed in doing so. They left Cloud for dead but Cloud grabbed Zack's sword and went to Midgar. That's where the No.1 Reactor story kicks off. Tifa finds him, gets him better and he joins AVALANCHE.

So Zack dies, basically.

Nothing battle-wise. He is just a character in the story of Cloud and Aeris' lives.

I can't tell all I know, because it would take about 2-3 full pages of text. What I can say to sum it up is:

Zack is a VERY important plot character. When Cloud was still a cadet in the Shinra Army, uneasy about failing - at the SOLDIER exam - because of his psyche profile, Zack helped Cloud have confidence. Zack even went and had a "chat" with the psychiatrist, Dr. Lambert. Also, Zack was about the only member of SOLDIER that stuck around the cadets. There's alot more stuff than just that though...

Also, Cloud, at the beginning of the game, has Zack's memories. Cloud was actually requested to be on the mission to Nibleheim by Zack. I think Zack's memories are why Cloud uses a Buster Sword... Cloud has Zack's memories until he falls into the Lifestream. That's when he remembers what really happened.

... One thing I still don't know: the actual meaning of "SOLDIER" I think that's an acronym...
