I just finished that part and know how annoying and frustrating it can be if you don't know how to do it (I spent like a week there). There is a tree just beyond the chef's place that has fallen down. You need to make that into a boat. You need to get a chisel from the chef by helping him. Then you need a hammer. You get the hammer handle from mrs. Feelgood and then you need 1 rock for the top of the hammer and 1 vine to strap them together. Then you go to the crafting table to make it. After, you go to the fallen tree and click on it. Select make and wait (it must be the beginning of the day and all your basic needs need to be almost full because it takes the whole day). Then the next day you do it again. Then you do it one more time to make a handcrafted canoe. People say that you need body points to ride the canoe and all these other complicated things. Don't listen to them it is actually really simple to use the canoe. Click on the arrow next to the boat on the ground (don't click on the actual canoe, that's what I kept doing) and select ride canoe. Then your sim will ride it to the next island. Hope I helped! :)
