Before sailing the seven seas, you should know that sailing a Ship in general will be no easy task. If you chose the Galleon, you will need your entire crew working in harmony for it to properly function. If you went with the Sloop instead, you will need to make up for having no real crew by being an expert in multi-tasking.

The first step in learning how to set sail is to find and located your destination. More often than not, you will be doing this by using the Treasure Maps or Riddles you find as your first clue to where you will be going. Always consult with these resources, confirming where you need to go by checking the Map Room on your vessel. This room holds the map of the entire game, showing where all the Islands are in relative position to where you are presently located. While sailing, make sure you or one of your crew members continuously keeps an eye on the map to make sure you are heading the right way.

After deciding where you are to go, the next step is to hoist the anchor of your Ship. If you are alone on the Sloop, you will have to do this for yourself. If you are on the Galleon, you can designate one of your crew members do this for you. You actually can have more than one of your crew members hoist the anchor, making the process go much faster.

Once the anchor has been hoist, you or one your crew members will need to take the helm and grab the wheel. As you steer, take notice of the compass located directly next to the wheel. This is here to help with the communication between the person steering the Ship and the one located in the Map Room; however, since neither of these people will be able to see directly in front of the ship, another crew members will have to be on the look out for any crow's nests or dangers ahead. If you are doing a Solo Run on the Sloop, you will basically have to do all of these task by yourself as you steer your ship.

While starting to sail, either yourself (if your are on the Sloop) or your other crew members (if you are on the Galleon) must check the lines along the Ship to either raise or fold the sails of the ship. Full sails will let the wind boost your vessel forward, but if it's blowing in the wrong direction of where you are heading or if you get caught in a storm, definitely make sure to lower your sails until the wind gets back behind you.
