On top of the forty-eight different Islands and five different Outposts, there are also nine different forts found across the map in Sea of Thieves. More of than not, these forts will be occupied and hold loads of treasures. However, the is a chance that sometimes one of these nine fort will be overcome by what is known as a Skeleton Fort. Skeleton Forts are marked by a skull cloud in the sky over one of the forts, and they signify an upcoming encounter with a skeleton army. When a Skeleton Fort is active, upon defeating said Skeleton Army and its Skeleton Captain, you will actually receive a key that will unlock the treasures held in the fort.
