Silk and Nylon Canopies

A couple of points that need making -- Parachuting while it is technically a sport activity in the game, is organized like a job in the sense that it has a number of rank-based scenarios that are set out for the player, each having a slightly different goal (though all of them have the same basic goal, which is to jump from a specific point, use your chute, pass through markers, and land at a designated target).

One of the more elusive points for a lot of players is how you win these. As odd as this may sound, it is not the first person to reach the ground on target who wins -- these are NOT races per se -- but rather it is the person who manages to stay as close to the center of each of the marker points as possible and then lands as close to the center of the target area as possible who wins!

Missing markers will cost you points -- hitting markers on the edges will also cost you points. Trying to go too fast will naturally result in not hitting the center and thus, will cost you points.

That being the case, the best approach is to take your time and be as accurate as possible.

The other thing that should be pointed out is that the devices that are used here are NOT actually parachutes -- a parachute is a canopy-like sheet of silk or nylon whose sole function is to slow the fall so that the person using it will survive that experience.

The devices that are used in the game are actually airfoils -- or wings -- and their purpose is to not simply slow down the person so that they survive the fall but actually provide a controllable vehicle by which the person can select and fly a specific path, control their rate of descent, and pick the spot on the ground they actually want to land at rather than being forced to land wherever it is that they end up.

Special Forces use the airfoil for HALO drops - often gliding as many as 15 miles to silently deploy at target locations so that the sound of the plane that they jumped from is never heard!

That is good for you, because the airfoils or wings that are used in the game provide a lot more control -- which is necessary if you want to score well -- you just need to learn how to fly them to the best of your ability!

Now how cool is that?

Hints and Tips: This copter jump sets you up on a close parallel to the ground, with the hill right there as you exit the copter so you will want to be attentive to opening your chute. Hints and Tips: Another copter jump, your first checkpoint is a brisk dive and opening ahead of you, after which the checkpoints are regularly spaced on a shallow glide path that meanders to your right, before turning into a fast descent to the left along the ridge of the mountain and into a valley.

The route follows a mostly dry stream bed that is edged by trees -- and towards the bottom of the run you have to be very aware of the trees and how close you are because just brushing against one will end your glide, causing your chute to disappear and you to slam into the ground!

The landing zone is situated just past a campsite after the stream ends.

Area: Mount Chilliad

Become one with nature as you plummet through Mount Chilliad Gorge from 3100ft, and pray that a gust of wind doesn't make you become one with the rock face.

Hints and Tips: This copter jump sets you at a point that is close to the mountain, so you want to remember NOT to freefall too long or it will make finding the best glide much more difficult than it needs to be for the first half-dozen checkpoints.

This is a fast jump, and you will reach the landing zone in the road much quicker than you might think BUT -- and this is a really important BUT -- if there is traffic on the road below you, you will need to engage the fine-aiming system (which has the effect of slowing down your descent while zooming in the point-of-view) so that you can time it so you land in the center of the landing zone AFTER the car or truck has passed.

Landing on top of a vehicle or being hit by it can end the jump as a failure.

What better way to take in the sights of Los Santos than by hurling yourself out of a helicopter? A 2355ft jump with wide, shallow turns, landing at La Puerta Harbor.

Hints and Tips: This copter jump is a brisk and fast set of checkpoints that takes you to the landing zone which is on one of the helicopter pads at the airport.

Note that if you have been following the guide and doing these jumps, not necessarily this jump mind you, you will unlock the Platinum Award called "Stayed On Target" which is awarded for using the "brakes" for an accurate and safe landing the required number of times. For a parachute landing to count for this you needed to have used the "brakes" (the fine-aiming mode activated by holding the right-and-left bumpers) while actually landing inside the landing zone target.

In addition to the Stayed On Target Award, there are additional Parachuting Awards -- Nick of Time, and Point Break. Nick of Time is awarded for deploying your parachute BELOW 130ft and landing safely, and Point Break is awarded for staying in the air for more than 3 minutes with the chute deployed. These two awards are probably not going to come naturally to you - you will need to actively work on them due to their odd requirements.

Area: Paleto Forest

A jump like this is a true test of focus and mental strength. Don't allow any ideas to creep in about the slapdash packing of your chute or the odds on a faulty ripcord. No, don't, really. This 7870ft descent dives sharply, then twists through the Paleto Forest.

Hints and Tips: This copter jump has a very sharp descent before deploying your chute, after which the checkpoints are fairly close with a few sharp turns before taking you to the LZ in the Police Station parking lot!

Up in the Clouds

Players: 1-8

Type: Parachuting

Area: Vinewood Hills

A mid-paced jump from 4100ft into central Los Santos with sweeping, shallow turns so, even if you're screaming like a baby in the air, you'll still look cool and graceful from the ground.

Hints and Tips: This copter jump has a short drop before you open your chute followed by a relatively long and meandering path along the checkpoints for a lazy arrival at the LZ in the park near the mall.

Vertigo

Area: Murrieta Heights

With a challenging, almost verticle, descent from 5590ft and many sharp twists and tuns, this is a jump to separate the men from the boys, the women from the girls, and your lunch from your stomach.

Hints and Tips: This fairly high copter jump offers a predictable glide path with a few sharp descents in order to line up a center-punch for a handful of the checkpoints, before taking you to the Los Angeles River for your LZ!

Arrive in Los Santos in style with a sweeping descent into the city center from 5419ft, and wave at all the drones in their office cubicles on the way down.

Hints and Tips: This copter jump was fairly high with a very sharp dive until near the end, when the path becomes an easy glide to the Park LZ.

Show some Vespucci beach bums the true meaning of 'spaced out' with this steep parachute descent from 2980ft. See how many checkpoints you can hit before opening your chute.

Hints and Tips: This copter jump is over before you know it despite its relatively high exit. The checkpoints are close together which requires some finesse in order to center-punch each for the best score. The LZ is near the beach.

Wind Turbine

Type: Parachuting

Area: Grand Senora Desert

You don't need reminding of the importance of harnessing the power of the wind when you're crouched by the door of a helicopter at 3280ft, but this jump hammers the point home.

Hints and Tips: A medium-high copter jump leads to a very relaxing route from checkpoint to checkpoint, with the LZ at the wind farm winding up the jump.
