Arms Race

Created by: Rockstar
Rank: 1
Players: 1 to 8
Area: North Chumash
Distance: 1.10 Miles.

Before the drones show up and this military base is taken over by robots, use the runways to push your vehicle to its limits. Simple loop lap race for cars and motorbikes at Fort Zancudo.

Hints and Tips: The Marker for this is actually above the north end of the tunnel, so once you exit the tunnel simply drive to the left, up the bank and through the bushes and you will spot it. It is OUTSIDE of the base fence just so you know.

This is a relatively short race with sharp turns, so you will need to focus upon skilled use of your brakes to drift those turns rather sharp. The fewer opponents the better for this one. Just saying.

Land Race: Bluffing

Bluffing

Created by: Rockstar
Rank: 18
Players: 1-8
Area: Chumash
Distance: 1.65 Miles

Off road lap race in Pacific Bluffs. Race in a loop along the lower roads, the beachfront, and under the historic Chumash family pier. Jumps and tight turns. Avoid the rocks on the beach and through the tight gap under the pier.

Hints and Tips: Basically you can select from the variety of ORV's here, but I would avoid the Mammoth Patriot for a couple of reasons, not the least being that if your opponents are smart they will avoid it as well. The Patriot is large, slow, and beastly to handle for this sort of race.

Avoid the Quad and the Dirt Bike -- unless you have all agreed that you will pick either Dirt Bikes or the Quad -- because all of the benefits and the strength for this race are on the side of the bug or the sand rail, which have more stability and better traction and handling.

The difference between the bug and the rail is the bug is a bit better on acceleration and top-end, and a bit more stable in the mixed surfaces whereas the rail is a lot more stable in the steady surfaces including sand.

By the Side of the Bay

Created by: Rockstar
Rank: 15
Players: 1-4
Area: Chilliad Mountain State Wilderness
Distance: 2.76 Miles.

Off road point-to-point starting in the dark heart of Mount Chilliad, shooting down its foothills, rolling through Paleto Bay, and coming to a stop on the white sands of Procopio Beach. Short road section, couple of jumps.

Hints and Tips: Basically this race will be different depending upon who you are racing it with -- which is to say if you are racing with friends then you can all agree on what type of rides you will be using. This is a fun race using Quads or Dirt Bikes but if you pick one of those and any of your opponents choose the bug or a sand rail you are pretty much going to lose this one.

If this is a pick-up race and you don't know the people you are racing you should pick either the bug or the sand rail because while the dirt bike may have better acceleration, the extra pair of wheels on the bug or sand rail is going to give them stability and better traction and cornering as well as survivability for brush-hits that will see you ejected from the bike or quad.

This race is long enough so that there is plenty of time for you to make mistakes - but also plenty of time for your opponents to as well -- so you should consider this one to be half-racing-opponents and half-racing-yourself. Just make fewer mistakes.

Criminal Records

Created by: Rockstar
Rank: 1
Players: 1 to 8
Area: Grand Senora Desert
Distance: 0.74 Mile.

Drive the hacks insane with some quick, quick laps around the walls of Bollingbroke Penetentiary. You can use a car or a motorbike as long as it's fast.

Hints and Tips: This is a relatively short circular track with 5-Laps, but the telephone poles along one side of the track make sloppy turns costly. Pick a car you are well-versed with and try not to drift too much in the turns.

The trick as is usually the case when races go long like this is to make fewer mistakes than your opponents make, and do everything that you can to encourage them to make mistakes :)

Cutting Coroners

Created by: Rockstar
Rank: 1
Players: 1 to 8
Area: San Andreas
Distance: 1.41 Miles.

Following the well-beaten path of many an ambulance, this short lap race takes you from South Central Los Santos, by the Police Station, to the Medical Center, and back out again. Suitable for all land Vehicles. Helps if you have a gunshot victim in the back seat.

Hints and Tips: This is a very tight race that requires good cornering and good control. You will find that using a car whose handling characteristics you know very well and can control will make all the difference, particularly if the other racers are "loose" in their racing habits.

When you say racing in GTAO this is what most players think of, not air, not water, and certainly not bikes but cars!

Dipping In

Created by: Rockstar
Rank: 1
Players: 1 to 16
Area: Vinewood Hills
Distance: 4.07 Miles.

See the power of stolen water and senseless irrigation at work with this long lap rade. Up to sixteen land Vehicles can take this track over the hills from leafy Vinewood to the arid Grand Senora.

Hints and Tips: This one is particularly nasty for a number of reasons -- the first of which is the length, which is long. One of the longest in the game as a matter of fact. The other thing that makes it nasty is that the game has staged interference Events all along the route. Vehicles that are staged to pull out in front of you, or you encounter fully stopped and blocking the road.

This is certainly one of the races in the game in which the challenge is it minimize your mistakes. The racer who does that best will win this.

Dock Ring

Created by: Rockstar
Rank: 35
Players: 1-8
Area: Elysian Island
Distance: 3.78 Miles

Like a trucker, hit the blacktop and keep going 'till you run out of gas. Land vehicle point to point that loops through the Port of LS and gets on the freeway all the way to the San Chianski Mountains.

Hints and Tips: This race uses sports cars, basically you are looking at small and fast cars with good acceleration and traction but very poor brakes. This class of car has a lot of drawbacks when it is being raced, starting with its habit of getting air in the most unlikely of circumstances - like popping over a railroad track or even turning a little too aggressively!

The poor breaking means you will do a fair bit of drifting rather than braking in the usual methods -- and you want to try very hard not to brush against objects including other cars due to the extreme reaction that often results from doing that.

Race conservatively, slow early and try to avoid aggressive turns and over-acceleration and with any luck your opponents will be making all of the mistakes you are avoiding and this will be an easy win!

Players: 1-8
Area: Terminal
Distance: 2.11 Miles

Keep your head on the swivel as you duck between containers, gantry cranes, and the occasional worker on a break at the Jetsam Terminal in Port City. Lap race with land Vehicles.

Hints and Tips: This is a mixture of fast open road and narrow tight turns, which means you will be using the brakes a bit. The winner will be the driver who makes the fewer mistakes, not the one who drives fastest.

Land Race: Double Parking

Double Parking

Created by: Rockstar
Rank: 1
Players: 1 to 8

Distance: 1.17 Miles.

You need a car if you are visiting Los Santos, and you need somewhere to park it when you're not sat stationary in a traffic jam. Race through the parking lots in this simple lap track for compact cars or motorbikes in Little Seoul.

Tips and Hints: This is not the race that the fastest drivers will win (which is good because it does not use the fastest cars heh) rather it is a race that is both against the traffic that the game throws in your path and against yourself. Basically you will find that the best time and position will be found in making fewer mistakes -- the driver who mnakes the fewest mistakes is usually the one who wins...

Iconic or a cliche -- pick up some speed as you race down the dry concrete channel of the LS River. Single loop laps for land Vehicles with two left-hand hairpin turns.

Hints and Tips: This is a nice tight race route though there are a few spots where you can get some good air, so you want to watch for that. At both ends the turn-around is very abrupt so slowing down for this is a very good idea. Just saying.

Downtown Underground

Created by: Rockstar
Rank: 8
Players: 1 to 8

Figure of eight track over multiple Levels in the business slash surveillance state hub of Downtown Los Santos. Lap race for land Vehicles with a jump.

Hints and Tips: While most of the route is easily run, the part where you go up near the FIB Building and have to jump is a major bottleneck! More than a few of the racers we raced ended up hitting one side of it or the other, the result being their cars blocked the opening making it impossible to hit until they cleared it themselves.

That being the case the jump is where you will want to try to pay attention to the markers on the radar to be sure it is open before you hammer down for a very spiffy cinematic.

Much better use of a Golf course than actually playing golf or talking about how much money you have. Race caddies around the links in this lap race and watch out for the water hazard.

Hints and Tips: While there is nothing particularly difficult about this race course, it is so oddly laid out that you really should try it solo before racing against others just so you understand its perks. The warning to watch out for the water trap specifically applies to the water under the VERY narrow broken bridge - you must jump that by the way.

Hints and Tips: While you have your choice of off-road Vehicles for this race, the Bug seems to have a serious edge both due to its small size, fast speed, and nimble turning abilities.

Land Race: Grand Tour

Grand Tour

Created by: Rockstar
Rank: 40
Players: 1-16
Area: Chilliad Mountain State Wilderness
Distance: 11.42 Miles

From the Great Ocean Highway to Vespucci Beach passing everything in between. This tourist trail point to point for cars or motorbikes takes in most of Southern San Andreas.

Hints and Tips: Another sportscar race and you will want to select the model you are the most comfortable with, bearing in mind that this class of car tends to have exaggerated reactions to hitting or brushing objects and aggressive handling - turning too hard into even a curve can easily result in the back-end breaking loose and the car spinning out -- the sort of mistake that can easily cost you the race.

While they have excellent accelerations and top-end, they have very poor breaking -- on the plus side your opponents are facing the very same limitations so there is that.

If the race is set to include Weapons, depending upon how you look at it that either makes it more interesting or more difficult :)

This is a very long race with lots of opportunities for mistakes to be made -- the trick here is to be the driver who makes the least mistakes and to capitalize upon the mistakes of your opponents.

Grass Route

Created by: Rockstar
Rank: 1
Players: 1 to 16
Area: Vinewood Hills
Distance: 3.26 Miles.

From the hills to the heartland -- this off-road point-to-point takes you down from the Vinewood Sign to near Fort Zancudo. It might get bumpy.

Hints and Tips: This race is marked by several challenges -- some low air and then a big air Event and then a series of bridges that serve as choke-points along the second half of the route. To manage those with the least interference you will want to try to put distance between you and the competition as soon as you can.

Basically as with most of these races you are relying upon your opponent making more mistakes that you do... With this being primarily a mixed-surface sand and water environment picking the appropriate ride - rail or bug - is the way to go. Always choose four-wheels over two if there is no agreement to use bikes.

Grass Route II

Created by: Rockstar
Rank: 1

Sequel to smash hit Grass Route, this off road point to point starts on the North bank of the Zancudo River, passes through the wetlands, and finishes on the beach in North Chumash. Expect some of the same dirt road hijinks you enjoyed the first time around.

Hints and Tips: As with the original due to the mixed surfaces with an emphasis upon sand and water you will want to pick either the bug or the sand rail -- I prefer the Bifta for this due in part to its slightly better traction and speed.

There are plenty of spots for making mistakes, and more than a few choke points, so you will want to build a bit of a gap between you and your opponents before the first choke point if you can.

Hints and Tips: This one has a fair number of tight turns on concrete so rather than picking the fastest beast available, pick a fast one with a high traction rating and you will find that you lose it a lot less on the turns, which translates into winning more.

Lap race passing Los Santos International, the Maze Bank Arena, and Little Seoul. You'll see lots of unused Grassland where you might be able to buy a body. Cars and motorbikes. The Prepare to Take Off billboard will separate the women form the girls.

Hints and Tips: This is a fairly medium route, with just a few tight corners but a lot of traffic (both with you and against you). You will find though that the industrial type area makes for some interesting racing, particularly if you end up trading a lot of paint...

Picking a smaller car makes a lot of sense for this race, due to the need to minimize your width and length while running the center line.

Lap race up and down the narrow canyon drives of Richman and Rockford Hills. Compact cars and motorbikes on this figure of eight track. Short off-road section but mostly paved.

Hints and Tips: With the presence of the dirt section you might think that this is a race that is better suited to motorcycles but no, cars seem to work best here -- and the fact that it is meant for compacts means you will be racing a class of car you don't ordinarily race in the game world. With the tighter turns, narrower roads, and the road traffic this is really a good race to show off your handling skills.

Some tight turns in this off-roader lap race in the Grand Senora Desert. You'll go over dirt roads, narrow paths, paved sections, and jumps as you pass the Redwood Lights Track and the Rebel Radio radio tower.

Hints and Tips: This race has to be run with tight control on speed due to the twisty-turning sometimes nasty curves you are facing. The cars seem to have a slight advantage over the bikes in that respect. Don't be afraid to use your brakes - because if your competition doesn't they will end up way off course and you, maybe slower, will be on-course and thus winning. Winning is good!

Area: Richman
Distance: 2.80 Miles

Help Students swap their college debt for medical bills in this lap race starting on the ULSA campus. Track covers the wide roads and narrow canyon drives of Rockford Hills. For cars and motorbikes.

Hints and Tips: There is a mix of three types of road here -- wider highway, narrow residential in the hills, and medium street surfaces that can make this tricky, particularly if you go into the air on the bumps (think cannot avoid hitting the back of a car ahead of you because you are in the air). Pick a car you know well, and make this a conservative race.

The idea is to avoid making mistakes rather than make top speed throughout. The players that win this race are the ones who drive strategically and are not afraid to use the brakes.

Hints and Tips: This is another race where selecting a car with high traction is a blessing even if it is a little slower or has a little less acceleration - the faster cars tend to spin out on turns and slide right past them in some cases - which means the driver with the best control is generally the winner.

Starting on the Del Perro Pier, do a circuit around the while of Los Santos finishing back at the end of the Pier. Point to point race for cars or motorbikes.

Hints and Tips: Another sportscar race -- as this class has good speed, good high-end, and great acceleration but really poor brakes you will want to pick the car in this class you are the most comfortable with and then drive as conservatively as you can manage and stay out front of the pack.

The idea here is to make as few mistakes as you can manage as you race more against yourself and the road than your opponents - because left to their own devices, if your opponents are not racing conservatively like you are, they are going to be making mistakes. In fact you are counting upon it.

The greatest impediment to you should be road traffic and not your opponents - well road traffic and turning corners without spinning out. Try to limit getting air as much as possible, since any time you are getting air you are not in control of the car.

The race ends at the end of the pier - I don't even want to know what happens after the flag drops considering how fast you are going and how close the end of the pier is :)

Hints and Tips: The best ride for this is your trusty Bifta sand bug -- just put the hammer down, put some great tunes on the radio and, oh yeah, don't spin out!

The mixed surfaces will present decent challenges in terms of maintaining forward progress -- once you cross the highway and enter the mountain road the trick is to not drive aggressively...

Be conservative and maintain control of your ride, and count on your opponents to spin out, brush the walls, and roll their rides while you work to maintain as tight a control of your ride as you can manage..

Hints and Tips: As it says above, you can do this with both cars and motorcycles. Considering that it is on heavily traveled roads you may find that motorcycles work best for weaving around the traffic, but the ability to use the Truffade Z-Type for this one makes that a pleasure...

The best strategy is to stick to the center line, but you have to be highly aware of the cars in front of you if you are approaching intersections or pull-offs, because they will often left-turn in front of you at the very last moment making it hard to avoid a collision!

Another thing to bear in mind is that the finish line is on a highway and you are crossing a line of oncoming traffic to reach it so be aware, try not to hit them...

The route starts out in the town, which means on paved surfaces, so you will need to mind the rear end and jeep it from breaking free. Once you are on the dry lake bed you need to be sure that you do not allow yourself to get tunnel vision in terms of the route or you can easily end up driving into a pond and ending your race.

Distance: 1.38 Miles.

Emergency services are on standby for collisions at this figure of eight track on the runways of Los Santos International Airport Lap race for four or two wheeled Vehicles.

Cheats and Strategies: This race is the best for getting your Driving Stat capped off as early as possible and in addition to that picking up a level (or two) of Rank, and unlocking the Platinum 'No Claims' Award.

You will pick up a level or two in rank just from beating your personal best lap times and the RP you get at the end for winning when you run this race all by yourself (solo) with the laps set to 50. When you flag the race simply change the Lap Count to 50 and then start the race without waiting for other players to join.

Complete the race and you get the 400 RP for first place plus the RP you earn for laps and the Awards you unlock along the way for not hitting things. Easy-Peasy Lemon-Squeezy!

The Commute

Created by: Rockstar
Rank: 1
Players: 1 to 16
Area: Pacific Bluffs
Distance: 3.50 Miles.

This land vehicle point-to-point answers the question 'what's the quickest way from the beach to East Los?'' once and for all. Up to sixteen racers taking the freeway from Pacific Bluffs to El Burro at the same time. Expect congestion.

Hints and Tips: This is highway all the way, and one of the better (read that more exciting) races when you are racing with other players who want to race. Unfortunately it is one of the more frustrating when you end up with a group of players whose idea of fun is to ram into and wreck you... This is one of the races that is best played with your crew.

Thrills in the Hills

Created by: Rockstar
Rank: 20
Players: 1-8
Area: West Vinewood
Distance: 1.85 Miles

Follow the party trail as you move form the clubs on Eclipse to the mansions and apartment blocks of Rockford Hills and West Vinewood. Wide boulevards going into narrow drives in this lap race for cars and motorcycles.

Hints and Tips: The biggest issue with this race is the traffic and how the NPC cars seem to swerve into you for hard to avoid head-ons. But discounting that and assuming you drive defensively the narrow turns and tight lanes require you to pump rather than push the gas for much of the race. This is certainly one of those races against yourself - the racer who makes the fewer mistakes is the one that will win.

Win or lose, the races are still massively fun and exciting challenges between you and your mates - or strangers - but win is usually better, just saying

Through the Grapevine

Created by: Rockstar
Rank: 1
Players: 1 to 8
Area: Lago Zancudo
Distance: 3.20 Miles.

Explore San Andreas wine country in this lap race for cars and motorcycles. Starting on the wide GOH, you'll take a two-lane back road through The Tongue Hills, Chumash, and Banham Canyon, coming back downhill to the Highway.

Hints and Tips: While this is easily raced in cars, due to the route and the traffic this is a lot easier on motorcycles.

Turn the Tide

Created by: Rockstar
Rank: 1
Players: 1-16
Area: Procopio Beach
Distance: 2.33

Hug the waterline with this off road point to point on Procopia Beach. Up to sixteen racers can follow the North coast down through Paleto State Beach to Paleto Cove.

Hints and Tips: This is another off-road race and for this environment I prefer the nimble and quick Bifta -- which handles well on both sand, mixed surfaces, and pavement.

To win this one it is very important that you not allow yourself to get enmeshed in a smash-up-derby or bumper cars action because you need to be first to the choke point, where you will get some massive air. Statistically whoever gets to the choke point first, and manages to complete that jump unmolested, will win this race.

After the big jump there is a section of mixed surface and then you are back on the beach, for a long push to the finish line.

Up the Back Alley

Created by: Rockstar
Rank: 25
Players: 1-4
Area: San Andreas
Distance: 1.04 Miles

Compact car circuit around scuzzy-chic Downtown Vinewood. Watch out for frat boy tourists and reality TV shoots. Lap race with some tight sections in alleyways.

Hints and Tips: While traffic is fairly light for this race they are not kidding about the alleys - and you want to try very hard to stick to the center of those as there are objects that will catch and wreck you if you are so unwise as to go near them.

Vespucci Dreams

Created by: Rockstar
Rank: 25
Players: 1-8
Area: Richards Majestic
Distance: 1.39 Miles

Wide streets, sea breezes, steroid junkies, and LS natives showcasing their latest plastic surgery. You'll see it all in this car and motorcycle lap race around laid back West Los Santos.

Hints and Tips: This is a relatively short circuit but it has tight corners with short gaps, so you will be best served paying strict attention to the road in front of you and not even worrying about the radar map or the competition. It is a bit difficult to get a clean start at first but you are best served getting some distance between you and the other racers for this one.

Land Race: Vinewood Nights

Vinewood Nights

Created by: Rockstar
Rank: 1
Players: 1 to 8
Area: Great Chaparral
Distance: 2.38 Miles.

You won't believe you're just outside the city limits as you snake your way around the Vinewood hills in this lap race. Road and off-road sections, long sweeping bends and tight hairpin turns. Suitable for cars and motorbikes.

Hints and Tips: This race is half on paved road and half on dirt road, and while it can be run using cars, when doing so expect to skid-out or lose it on some of the turns. Now on the other hand this race seems to have been created for motorcycles! In fact using the dirt bike you can get some amazing times in on it.

So this concludes the Land Races for GTAO -- which while you obviously did not complete them in order or anything like in order, particularly considering that the Land Races are the largest variety and selection of races in the game to date -- with any luck you won more than you lost, and more to the point, you had fun doing it.

So yeah, good on ya, well done!
