Top 10 Starter Pokemon

#3 - Squirtle

Up next is Squirtle, who is the second highest ranked Kanto Region Starter Pokemon and the highest overall Water-Type Starter Pokemon. Squirtle is cool, and better yet, it's the original cool Pokemon. Before the Treecko's of the Pokemon World, there was Squirtle. Squirtle was made famous mainly in part from the Squirtle Squad Gang in the original season of the Anime Season. That began this Pokemon's popularity, and it has soared every since.

Squirtle arguable has the best design among the Kanto Starter Pokemon, looking cooler than both Charmander and Bulbasaur. Charmander might have the best final evolution among the three where design is concerned, but that doesn't mean Charmander looks better than Squirtle.

Since we already mentioned Charizard, we might as well go ahead and mention Blastoise, Squirtle's final evolution. Blastoise was a great lead Pokemon in the original Pokemon Games (Pokemon Red and Pokemon Blue). It fared well against the original eight Gym Leader and the original Elite Four. It had good defensive stats and still hit pretty hard. Unfortunately, Blastoise didn't compare in popularity to Charizard; the latter was just the preferred choice.

Blastoise might have been a good Pokemon in game, but it wasn't really good in competitive play. It was just too slow, and there were better water type choices. Luckily it, along with the other Kanto Starters, received a Mega Evolution, which was really good for Blastoise. Mega Blastoise has ridiculous defensive stats, and hits pretty darn hard. It's not the best Mega Evolution out there, but it's still a good one.

Squirtle, like Bulbasaur, has had a tough going because it always lived in the shadows of Charmander and Charizard. But unlike Bulbasaur, Squirtle has been able to hold its own better against them, mainly because of its design and Anime fame. And that's why it ranks in the top three on our list.
