Ok. First off that is not very stupid. Second no you don't have to wait, it is a luck thing. When you see the egg, you pick it up, look at it, and if it is fertilized, it is, if it isn't then it isn't. (p.s. Look at it his way... Can you fertilize an egg after it is out of the chicken.... No)

I agree with runscaper389: That isn't a stupid question. In my first file I spent 3600G on 3 roosters until I realized I only needed one to fertalize my eggs. But enough rambling: To have the egg hatch, it is essential (Essential; don't you love that word?) to place the fertalized egg in the the little box in the top-right corner of the coop. It will take about five days for it to hatch, when the sprites tell you if it's a girl or boy.

I want to let runescape389 in on a little secret..you do have to wait. Even in real life chicns are external ferilizers. Meaning the eggs is only fetilized ofter the rooster sits on it. I promise you. Thats why it's impossible to find a chicken in an egg unless you have natural eggs. So all in all if you wait and NOT pick up an egg till later in the day. So in conclusion ... Do wait to pick up the chicken and egg till l8 in the evening. And it should be fertilized.
