Team Sonic Racing is a kart racing game that is a spinoff from Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog series. It combines the best elements of arcade and fast-paced competitive style racing as you face-off with friends in intense multiplayer racing. You control one of 15 characters from the series' cast and are part of a team of racers who must win races through efficiency rather than speed. Game modes in Team Sonic Racing include competing to earn points, time trials, customising the racing rules, and a story-driven tutorial campaign. Check out our Sonic Team Racing walkthrough and guide to find out how you can win races.
Fast Start
The key to winning any Team Sonic Racing race is to get a good start. The technique to fly off the line as soon as the lights turn green is to press the accelerator in time with the 3-2-1 countdown when the race begins. If you manage to get the timing perfect on all three you will get a sudden boost off the line which will be indicated by blue flames coming out the exhausts of your kart. Correctly timing one or two numbers in the countdown will give you a reduced version of the boost.
Team Leader
Gold tire marks for your teammates to follow will begin appearing behind your kart when you are the racer that is furthest forward in the race. All the time this is happening your teammates will be awarded with a Slingshot Boost that will help them to move further up the field. You can make it easier for your teammates to follow you by driving calm and easy.
Wisp Transfers
If you are towards the front of the pack you may want to consider sharing items (Wisps) with teammates who are further back in the field to help the team's placing as a whole. When you share Wisps you give teammates the opportunity to improve their position by surging forward or sabotaging other teams. Don’t hoard Wisps as you can only hold a maximum of two so always look for opportunities to use them.
Slingshot Boost
When you find yourself as the racer that is furthest behind the pack you need to keep an eye out for the slipstream of gold tire marks of your team leader and try to stay behind them long enough so you earn the Slingshot Boost which will catapult you forward when you leave your teammate's trail.
Skim Boost
Whenever you are in a position to overtake a teammate try and skim them as you pass as doing so will give them a Skim Boost which will help them get back into the race.
Team Ultimate
Make sure you pay close attention to your Ultimate Meter and activate it when it is full to put all three of your team members in a yellow invincible state that drastically increases their speed and lets you travel over any terrain. The Ultimate Meter is replenished whenever you do slingshots, skim boosts, or Wisp transfers to teammates. Look to start filling up the Ultimate Meter again as soon as your speed returns to normal.
Collecting Rings
Even though amassing Rings will give you a higher top speed you should not focus on picking them up. Like other games in the Sonic franchise you will lose all of your amassed rings if you get hit by any item. In the event this happens only a handful will fall on the track for you and other racers to pick up after you spin out.
Drift Boost
You can get a boost while racing around the track by drifting, the Drift Boost is a manoeuvre which sees your kart slide round corners instead of normally steering round them. As you drift round corners you can build up your boost up to three times for the maximum blue boost. Try to Drift Boost around as many corners as you can to keep your top speed up.
Tricks
Another way to get a boost while racing around the track is by doing tricks. When you are shot upwards at certain parts of the track you will be able to perform lateral or verticle flips which will reward you with a boost if you can land safely afterwards. Performing three flips in a row will give you the maximum blue boost.
Practice
If you continually practice tracks and their Mirrored equivalents you will eventually reach the point where you will know the track layouts and its obstacles. On most of the tracks there are multiple routes that can be taken, some of which are quicker than others and knowing where they are will hold you in good stead online or in local multiplayer.
