Monster Train Walkthrough and Guide

Monster Train is a strategic roguelike deckbuilding dungeon crawler that takes place on a moving train which you have to guide to the center of hell which has frozen over. Your job is to get the last remaining fragment of the pyre back there to reignite it. Your tools to defeat the angelic enemies who are trying to stop you include spells and monsters. As you battle your way back to hell you will have opportunities to improve your deck of cards as you constantly asses your priorities, and figure out where to spend your resources. Check out our Monster Train Walkthrough and Guide to get help in the game.

Protect Synergies

Monster Train has numerous possibilities for synergies that will improve significantly the value of your units and spells. Scaling is important in Monster Train as it will allow you to progress through the game faster so make sure you focus on assembling and protecting these combos. An example of scaling is giving a +power upgrade to a unit with multistrike.

Build a Balanced Deck

Make sure you put together a balanced deck as your 'velocity' on any given turn depends on your ember and the number of cards you have access to. Remember that adding expensive cards to your deck will increase your need for ember. You can increase the value of card draw by adding free spells or reducing the cost of cards.

Deck Size

Monster Train is no different to other similar deck-building games where cutting cards will improve your deck. In Monster Train this is crucial as the game's upgrade system can drastically improve cards, which means that there will often be a vast difference in power level between the best and worst cards in your deck, even before the consideration of synergies. Also, removing spells will make a bigger difference in your deck size.

Experiment on Runs

Throughout Monster Train you will be faced with three varieties of obtacles: frontline enemies with high health, backline enemies with low health, and bosses. Experiment with your deck by playing cards out as much as you can, preferably with upgrades, to get a feel for their utility - even if doing so makes your current run worse.

Position Units Carefully

It is important that you position your units in a way that allows you to take full advantage of their capabilities. If you have a unit that deals big damage but is lacking in the health department you should look to position them behind another unit so they have more time to get their attacks off safely, potentially getting stronger as time goes by and even buffing nearby allies if they survive.

Don't Underestimate Enemeis

Pay close attention to all the enemies in Monster Train and don't underestimate any. Even if an enemy seemingly has low health and appears vulnerable there is always the possbility they are compensating for it with high damage.

Set Up Infinites

Look to set up Infinite loops whenever possible by using any two non-consume, free draw this turn spells that can cycle each other when the rest of your deck is out of the way. Cards that can be used for this purpose are:

• Pyre-Gro

• Awoken’s Railspike with The First Hellpact

• Endless Scholar/Trancensdimps with Forever Flame and an Imp-In-The-Box

• Offering Monument with Cycle of Life.

• Excavated Ember from the event.

Upgrade your Train Stewards

Spend some of your cash on increasing your Train Stewards' health and damage when you first start out in Monster Train as doing so will ensure that they are not just cannon fodder, but units that can hold their own on a floor. All Starter Decks in Monster Train begin the game with 4 of Train Steward units and they can gain Damage Shield 2 and Multistrike by having the Advanced Prototype Artifact.

Choose your Path Carefully

The most impactful decisions you make in Monster Train are the paths you choose between battles. Whenever you win a round you will be given the choice of two paths you can take. Each of the paths will offer different rewards such as Artifacts, money, and shops where you can spend the gold you have earned to upgrade your units or spells. Always take the time to consider which path will benefit your deck and overall situation the most before deciding on which one to take.
