In Monster Train your Champion is a card in your Starter Deck that is determined by the Primary Clan you chose before a run. There are five Champions in Monster Train and on the first turn of a battle you you will always draw this card. You cannot permanently duplicate your champion, and the only way to upgrade them is through the Dark Forge event found during Limbo, The Waxen Arches and Scorched Plains Rings. Check out our Monster Train Clan Champions Tier List to find out which ones are the best based on the power level each has as a Primary Clan.

#1 - Rector Flicker

Rector Flicker
Rector Flicker

Clan: Melting Remnant

Capacity: 2

Attack: 10

Health: 10

Upgrades:

• Burn Bright

• Accumulator

• Dark Calling

Melting Remnant is a great Primary Clan to pick because doing so gives you access to the versatility of Rector Flicker. The upgrade paths of this Clan Champion gives him both the potential to grow absolutely enormous, or constantly regenerate fallen friendlies. The downside to this Champion is that he tends to be more deck-dependant than the other Champions in Monster Train but even so he is still the best of the bunch.

#2 - Tethys Titansbane

Tethys Titansbane
Tethys Titansbane

Clan: Stygian Guard

Capacity: 1

Attack: 5

Health: 3

Upgrades:

• Chillwind

• Conduit

• Handheld Totem.

Tethys Titansbane is basically a mage/shaman type of Clan Champion who has abilities that apply Frostbite and Spell Weakness to enemies. He also has an option to reduce the cost of friendly units. The downside of Tethys Titansbane and what keeps him off of the number one positon is that he is squishy. Even if you can keep this Clan Champion protected he is always only one stray shot away from being killed and most faction combinations don't have a way to bring him back from the Consume pile.

#3 - Hornbreaker Prince

Hornbreaker Prince

Clan: Hellhorned

Capacity: 2

Attack: 6

Health: 6

Upgrades:

• Brawler

• Reaper

• Wrathful

Hornbreaker Prince is the Clan Champion to one of the strongest Clans in Monster Train and although he is initially average and needs to be protected he has the best scaling of all the Clan Champions if you can improve his stats in order. Hornbreaker Prince is inferior to Tethys Titansbane who fills exactly the same role of single target DPS (damage per second) except that the Stygian Guard Champion does it much more reliable and is more efficient in terms of capacity.

#4 - The Sentient

The Sentient
The Sentient

Clan: Awoken

Capacity: 2

Attack: 0

Health: 10

Upgrades:

• Explosive

• Cultivating

• Bristling

The Awoken Clan has the best defence in Monster Train and its Champion, The Sentient is the embodiment of this, being able to absorb a great deal of damage easily. Although her Attack stat is 0 her Explosive path deals damage when she's healed. The Sentient one of the few Clan Champions whose abilities can be removed during a battle.

#5 - Penumbra

Penumbra
Penumbra

Clan: Umbra

Capacity: 3

Attack: 20

Health: 20

Upgrades:

• Architect

• Monstrous

• Glutton

The Penumbra is not an easy Champion to play due to the fact that it takes up 3 floors and the Monstrous upgrade path makes it take up 6 Capacity, this means it requires a lot of planning and preparation. This though will be rewarded with decent attack increases making it a pure damage dealer. The downside to this Champion is that for Penumbra to reach its potential it requires support regardless of its upgrade path.
