How do you get a stray to join the family?

Firstly you have to become really friendly with the cat you want to join the family. Then select the cat and a new icon should appear *special*. There is a list and one of them says *take in stray*. Select this and the cat is now yours.

P.S if you do not see the *special* icon the cat is not a stray.
