You can cure the flu with some effort:
First, when the owner asks how long reply with 5 days. Then, when the owner leaves, go into the catalogue. Select the vet option (I forget what it's called but it has 'vet' in the name and it might be on the third page) then search for 'pet medicine'. You will want to buy at least 5 (for the five days). Then exit that, and select the pet. Take the pet to the diagnosis table, and a new option will have come up on the bottom left. Select it and choose 'pet medicine'. Then administer it to the pet. If you need any extra help with this, select the '?' icon (it gives you details on how to proceed).
Give the pet this treatment once every day for the 5 days and it will be good as new when the owner returns. ^_^ Good luck.
