You need to beat him in order to get back into the temple. They are summoners from Bevelle who have the dark aeons which are really strong optional bosses and Valefor is the weakest of the dark aeons. In order to beat them you will need to have very high HP&MP and most of your stats maxed for at least 3 characters. Auto life is very useful against them.
