No, it is not possible to unlock sonic as a playable characters. If it was, it would be on an action replay code, but I don't have one of those.

Sorry mate but that's not possible. Sonic the Hedgehog is copyright to Sega and SSBM is made by Nintendo, so if they had put Sonic on the game for each copy of the game made Nintendo would have to pay Sega in royalties which doesn't sound like much but being that SSBM has probably sold millions and that hardly anyone would be able to find it, it could stack up to a lot of cash. Sorry about all the legal junk my friend wants to be a lawyer.
However I do hear there's a way to unlock Toad but it's on a different website. But the URL is on the hints page so check it out.

Sonic is in Super Smash Brothers Brawl, though. That might be why people are saying he is in the game.
