How do you get missingno (or M) without it messing up the game?

If you mean by catching it then you can't catch it without messing up your game. If you want to just face him then talk to the guy in viridian who shows you how to catch Pokemon and then go to the seafoam islands where you surf up and down the right side and he will appear.

As for Missingno...

Let me tell you about Missingno, it is a special debugger test code that Nintendo put in the final touches of the game to test it out and to make sure the game was fuctioning correctly. Apparently, they forgot to take it out, and the codes that this thing possesses are absolutely random, causing different and random effects. The abberation known as Missingno will cause unpredictable effects, and the result of all of your choices in the game, from what Pokemon you chose to the attacks they know to the time you have played the game can affect what Missingno will do to the game. It has been know to debilitate a person's game in one way or another, leaving the Game Pak completely destroyed or inflicted with irreversable damage. As for this, there is no positively precise answer to suit your problem, as all Game Paks are different and Missingno will engage in different activites in each one. Missingno has screwed some people's games, it can cause the graphics to become pixelated, can screw your Hall of Fame from defeating Elite Four if you put it in the PC... It can do many things. My response: there is no precise answer. The only way to find out if Missingno will hurt your game is to encounter it yourself, which may take some bravery, but you can do it. It has never hurt my game, but don't take my word for it- just because mine didn't become debilitated doesn't need to mean yours won't either.

You can't. It will always mess up your game. The difference is when it will mess up your game and what it will mess up. Once I got myself one, transferred it into my PC, and my records of the Pokémon League were erased! The guys who won were: Level 62 Charizard, level 60 Pidgeot, level 59 Nidoking, level 55 Moltres, and a level 60 Articuno. After getting Missingno, the Pokémon were: a level 160 Raticate, named "H0m,t", a level 206 Nidorino named "9l6ypo", a level 197 Invisible Pokémon (the image of the Pokémon was missing, but it's cry was like a Nidoran male, but shorter) named "!dT,,MP", and the other three I don´t remember well. I got really scared, that I thought there was a mistake on my GamePak, so I started again. I had later found out Missingno was the cause of that glitch. Be careful, Missingno can change or release your Pokémon, mess up your Hall of Fame data (what has happened to me), and even erase up your game! It is true that it can become any Pokémon, have any level or attacks, but it's risky to try to catch it. In conclusion, you can't get Missingno without getting a glitch in your game too.

Steps to a glitch free missingno. 1.catch a Missingno.
2.let the graphic glitches(thats what I call it) go on
3.after a while it should stop. Yay a glitch free .....well...glitch!

I would only try catching MISSINGNO if I either don't really care or have it as a computer rom. But like the other people say, there is no telling what can happen if you do catch it.
