How to Change the Camera Mode (Special Effects)

The 3DS Camera offers different special effects that can help improve or personalize your photos. You can change these settings before taking a photo. To access the settings, follow the steps below.

Changing Camera Mode



  1. Launch the Camera application from the Home menu.

  2. If you launched the 3DS camera from the main menu by pressing the L/R buttons, tap Nintendo 3DS Camera in the bottom right to launch the application.

  3. Flip the red lever in the lower right to bring up the main menu

  4. Select the camera mode you want to apply then take the photo when ready.

Different Camera Modes


  • Normal: No Special Effects

  • Sparkle: Blow on the mic to decorate your photo. You can repeat it to get different decorations floating in the screen.

  • Merge: Merge the subject and your far using the outer and inner cameras.


  • Dream: Adds hazy, dream-like quality to the photos

  • Low Light: Great for taking images in low-light conditions

  • Pinhole: Lighten the center and darken the edges of the photos

  • Mystery: Random mode chosen when you take a pic. (Manual controls can't be used)
