Charles W. Reed is just a normal human who is outmatched whenever he goes up against supernatural enemies that are found in the city of Oakmont. For Reed to have any hope of surviving you will need to unlock new skills for him. Our Skills Guide for The Sinking City will help you to improve Reeds chances of defeating the enemies he encounters and solving the various cases.
Reed will earn experience by solving the cases around Oakmont, when you reach a certain amount of experience you will earn a Knowledge Point. It is these Knowledge Points which are used to unlock new skills for Reed. You can always check your progress by going to the 'Skills' tab in your menu and looking at the upper right corner.
In The Sinking City there are three different categories of skills, these are Combat Proficiency, Vigor, and Mind.
Combat Proficiency
The skills on the left side of this category improve the effectiveness of traps, firebombs, and grenades while the skills found on the right side increase your guns' capacity, accuracy, and damage.
Vigor
The skills on the left side of this category increase your inventory capacity for ammo, grenades, first aid, and antipsychotics while the skills on the right side increase your health, increases your melee damage, and reduces the amount of damage you take from falling or eels.
Mind
The skills on the left side of this category increase your efficiency when crafting while the skills on the right increase the XP you earn, makes your sanity stronger, and gives you a chance to earn double rewards for completing cases.
Without doubt the best overal skills you can have in The Sinking City are:
• Tight Spring
• Trench Sweeper
• No Charity
• Silver Tongue
You will not need the Tight Spring and Trench Sweeper skills until you unlock the shotgun near the end of the Throgmorton quests but once you do obtain it you should focus on picking up those two skills and leveling them up whenever possible. Having the combination of those four skills in place will mean you should not have too much difficulty staying alive with enough crafting materials to make whatever you need. This will significantly reduce the overal difficulty of the game.
