Nioh 2 Walkthrough and Guide

Nioh 2 is an action RPG that is a prequel to Nioh which was released in 2017. The game is set in the late 1500s and reveals the secret history of a decades-long period of war in medieval Japan. You play the role of a character nicknamed 'Hide', who fights to uncover the secret nature of 'spirit stones', which grant supernatural power, and defeat hordes of Yokai across the country. Nioh 2 has multiple general skill trees to customise your hero and character levels that increase his stats based on earning Amrita from killing enemies. Nioh 2 is also a loot game so you will constantly be looking at new weapons with tradeoffs that tweak your stats. Check out our Nioh 2 Walkthrough and Guide to get help in the game.

Choosing Starter Weapons

There is a whole array of starter weapons from which to choose from and you are able to select two of them from the get-go. Many of them return from the original game and its DLCs but there are new double hatchets and switchglaive that you may want to try out. The hatchets allow swift hacking at your foes and can also be thrown at distant enemies while the switchglaive, depending on your stance can be used three different ways. In a low stance the switchglaive can be used like a dagger, in mid stance it transforms into a spear-like weapon and in high stance the switchglaive can be weilded like a scythe. Make sure that the two weapons you decide to choose offer different aproaches to battle, one heavy hitter alongside a faster blade. Check out our Best Weapons Guide to get help choosing weapons for your character.

Ki Pulse

In Nioh 2 your stamina is called Ki and it is just as important as your life gauge. Whenever you dash, dodge and weapon swing you will deplete Ki, therefore it is important that you keep an eye on your Ki because if it runs out you will not be able to attack or avoid an incoming blade which will result in the death of your character. Ki does however gradually recover over time and by tapping R1 when a blue glow surrounds your character will create a Ki Pulse which will cause your stamina to increase. Try to unlock the Samurai Skill called Running Water as soon as possible as this will allow you to dodge away from an enemy and perform a Ki Pulse at the same time.

Yokai Abilities

A new feature in Nioh 2 is Yokai Abilities which are special moves that are unlocked by obtaining, purifying and attuning Yokai Soul Cores. These special skills will enable your Guardian Spirits to do powerful new moves, and have special effects that will enhance your overall build. Watch closely during a fight for a red flash around your foe as this is your signal to activate the Counter and deal some serious health and Ki damage with a Yokai ability.

Steal your Enemies’ Abilities

Soul Cores are a new item in Nioh 2 that hold the remnants of a Yokai's power. They are obtained by defeating the more powerful Yokai you face and can be used by attuning them with your Guardian Spirit. Once attuned at a Shrine, the Soul Cores give you the ability to use some of the notable skills of the Yokai you stole it from. Your ability to perform Yokai abilities is locked to your Anima Gauge, a new gauge in Nioh 2 which appears as a purple bar below your Ki. This can be replenished by defeating enemies and absorbing other Soul Cores. Check out our Where to Farm Soul Cores Guide to find out where you need to go to get them.

Yokai Shift

In Nioh 2 Yokai Shift is a mechanic that allows you to become possessed by your Guardian Spirits and enact powerful attacks and special moves. You can attune your Guardian Spirits with Soul Cores which will grant Yokai Skills that may be used without a transformation, and consume Yokai Force. If you are struggling to deafeat an enemy you may have more success if you return to a Shrine and change your Spirit Guardian so you can try a different approach in your Yokai form. Check out our How to use Amrita to Yokai Shift guide to find out more about this ability in Nioh 2.

Righteous Jasper

Benevolent blue graves are places you can interact with using Ochoko Cups which can be found by defeating souls from Bloody Graves to summon help from a player character. This mechanic allows you to leave behind an NPC version of your character for other players to summon in their world to fight alongside until their mission is over, or they are defeated. In Nioh 2 there is a new consumable called Righteous Jasper which when used creates a Benevolent Grave where you stand. Check out our Benevolent Graves Guide to find out more about how this mechanic works in Nioh 2.

Escape the Dark Realm

The Dark Realm is a mechanic of Nioh 2 that manifests as grey pools under certain enemies, and also as entire sections of areas that will envelop all who enter. The Dark Realm is a dangerous place where your Ki will struggle to replenish and the Yokai you encounter will be more powerful. Chests will be locked and the shrines unusable and the only way to escape is to find the Yokai who dragged you in and defeat them. Upon doing so they will drop useful loot and the chests and shrines will unlock.

Shrines

Shrines are special alters in Nioh 2 that that you can interact with and offer a brief respite from the challenges of your journey. Praying at a shrine will reset the level and heal your character to the full and act as a respawn point should you be defeated. Shrines appear as green dots on your map, when you are near to one you will hear the high-pitched chanting of the Kodama.

Play Sub Missions

Playing the various sub missions in Nioh 2 is worthwhile as they give you the opportunity to earn amrita, these are the experience points which your character collects to level up. Sub missions also enable you to get powerful weapons or smithing texts which are books that teach Tome the blacksmith how to make better gear. Just make sure before undertaking a sub mission your characters level is several levels higher than the mission level.
