There are two basic currencies in knights and dragons: Rise of the Dark Prince. These are Gold, and Gems. Users familiar with other games of this kind will instantly know the difference between these two.
Essentially, Gold is the regular, everyday currency that you will use for basic tasks such as building and upgrading structures, crafting and Enhancing Armor.
Gems are the premium currency, which means they are incredibly hard to earn and, for the most part, you can only get them by spending real money on them. See each section below for more info on how to earn each of these and what they are best used for.
Gold is the basic currency in knights and dragons. You earn it through a number of Buildings which can be used to effectively generate gold. These include structures such as Taverns, Fountains and Cathedrals. You can use Gold to purchase certain buildings (particularly those which generate Gold) among other things. See the Buildings section of this guide for information on the best structures to build for Gold generation.
You can also earn Gold from fighting in the Arena, as rewards for quests, and as daily rewards for revisiting the game. As with most things, you are also able to physically purchase Gold with real life money if you wish to.
Gems are knights and dragons' premium currency. This means that they are a scarce resource which, for the most part, you are forced to pay real money for. There are, however, other ways to come by them. Very occasionally you are rewarded with Gems for Leveling Up, and you can also take part in various offers and watch promotional videos to get some for free.
To do this, tap the plus icon next to the Gems counter in the upper-right corner of the screen. This will take you to the in game shop. Scroll all the way to the right and choose the Get Free Gems option. You can then decide whether to watch videos or take part in offers to earn your Gems. Often the video link doesn't work, but you can follow the Offers link to also get some videos to watch. Normally these reward you with 1 Gem.
If you do some of the other offers though, like signing up for insurance with a certain company, you can often earn over 50 Gems! Which in reality are not worth that much, but in terms of the game time that would be required to get them for people unwilling to spend money in knights and dragons, it's not to be sniffed at.
