In Desperados III there are five different playable characters you can switch between throughout the game. These characters each have distinctly different skills and abilities that you can use to your advantage to help overcome your current predicament. John Cooper is the all rounder of the bunch with close-combat and ranged options at his disposal, Doc McCoy is better suited for long-range shooting while Hector is proficient at dealing damage up close. Kate O'Hara is a master manipulator who uses her good looks and sultry approach to distract enemies and Isabelle Moreau has supernatural abilities at her disposal. Check out Character Guide to find out how to best use each character.

John Cooper

John Cooper
John Cooper

John Cooper is a wandering bounty hunter on a mission to track down the ruthless gunslinger named Frank whom he has a score to settle. John Cooper is unlocked from the very beginning of Desperados III where you play as a younger version of him in the game’s opening tutorial level, Once Upon a Time.

Passive Abilities

John Cooper has several useful passive abilites, he is physically strong being able to carry a body slung over his shoulder and can move rapidly if you need to find somewhere to dispose of it. He is good at climbing, able to use ladders, growing ivy and ropes to climb up vertical obstacles and also swim which becomes useful in the later levels of the game.

Takedown Options

Lethal option - Knife

• Range: 0.5

• Noise Radius: 3.0

• Duration: 2 seconds

Non-lethal option - Punch

• Range: 1.0

• Noise Radius: 3.0

Skills

John Copper has a trusty throwing knife which he is able to use as a long-range projectile. The downside of using the throwing knife is it has to be retrieved from wherever it landed after being thrown. He also has an endless supply of fake coins in his pocket which he can use to momentarily distract an enemy so he can move around undetected. Cooper also carries a couple of revolvers for a less stealthier alternative.

Doc McCoy

Doc McCoy
Doc McCoy

Arthur McCoy, nicknamed 'Doc' is a long-ranged specialist that can pick of enemies from afar with his long-barreled revolver and as his nickname would suggest is a doctor, and as such can heal all the members of the group. He can also concoct potions which can be used on enemies. Doc McCoy is unlocked early in Desperadoes III when John Cooper encounters him in the Running Late on Payday mission and they decide to team up.

Passive Abilities

Doc is physically weaker than John Cooper and and has to resort to slowly dragging a body in order to hide it in the landscape. He can only climb ladders and cannot swim which limits his traversal options in certain levels of Desperados III.

If an enemy decides to open the bag they will be briefly blinded. As with John Cooper's throwing knife Doc will need to retrieve his bag to use it again. He can retrieve it whether it has been opened or not. Doc Mcoy also has a Buntline, a long-barreled variant of the Colt Single Action Army revolver which he can use to instantly kill enemies from afar. Being a master apothcary Doc also has the ability to concoct poisons which he can use to his advantage.

Hector Mendoza

Hector Mendoza
Hector Mendoza

Hector Mendoza is physically the biggest and strongest character of the group and adept at taking down individuals or groups of guards with his ability to deal damage up close, either luring enemies into his devastating bear trap or towards the sharp end of his axe. Hector is unlocked at the start of the Troublemakers in Flagstone mission when he meets John Cooper in the local saloon bar and they join forces.

Passive Abilities

Hector is a big man who possesses immense strength which enables him to comfortably carry two bodies at a time and still move rapidly. Similarly to Doc, he can climb ladders, but is unable to swim.

Takedown Options

Lethal option - The Axe

• Range: 1.0

• Noise Radius: 3.0

• Duration: 2.1 seconds

Hector has a Bear Trap which he has named 'Bianca' which he can set anywhere on the ground and once laid becomes imperceptible to enemies who face being mauled to death if they become trapped in it. Bodies captured in Bianca do not need to be hidden as there is not enough left of a body to dispose of. Bianca will need to be retrieved after being placed to be used again. Hector also has a whistle which he can use to distract the enemy who will wander curiously to the source of the noise. Hector always carries a canteen which contains a special brew which if he a sips will fully heal him irrespective of how much damage he has taken. Hector's weapon of choice is a Sawed-Off Shotgun that damages all enemies in a cone direction from where he is facing.

Kate O'Hara

Kate O'Hara
Kate O'Hara

Kate O'Hara is the sultry would-be-bride of Mayor Higgins who takes full advantage of her seductive looks and disguises to cause significant distractions. This little minx also has a few deadly tricks at her disposal which she can use to deal with enemies that get in her way. Kate O'Hara first appears in the Until Death Do Us Part mission where she is about to marry Mayor Higgins but instead ends up joining the other Desperados.

Passive Abilities

Kate O'Hara is almost as strong physically as Doc McCoy which means that she is only able to dispose of bodies by slowly dragging them. She is able to climb ladders but cannot swim.

Takedown Options

Lethal option - None

Kate O’Hara is the only character that doesn’t have a lethal takedown

Non-lethal option – Kick

• Range: 1.2

• Noise Radius: 3.0

• Duration: 3 seconds

Skills

Kate O’Hara's Perfume Vial is more than just a pleasant smell, when it is thrown it will make enemies in the vincinity sneeze, and temporarily blind them. Kate is also able to don a disguise which will not only fool the enemy but allow her to walk around freely. However, Long Coats and Guard Dogs will see through her disguise. Kate can also approach enemies and flirt with them to distract them. The flirt itself will force the enemy to follow her or keep their gaze in a certain direction. Kate’s only weapon is her concealed Derringer firearm, a small-sized handgun that is quiet and effective at close range.

Isabelle Moreau

Isabelle Moreau
Isabelle Moreau

Isabelle Moreau is a master of voodoo and possesses supernatural abilities that give her unique options to distract, control and destroy any enemy she encounters. Isabelle Moreau is the final character that you unlock in Desperados III and will become a playable character from the start of the Louisiana Voodoo mission.

Passive Abilities

Isabelle Moreau has similar passive abilities as John Cooper in that she can carry a body over her shoulder and move at normal pace whilst doing so. She is also able to climb laders, ropes, and ivy to get to higher ground and she is able to swim.

Takedown Options

Lethal option - Sickle

• Range: 1.0

• Noise Radius: 3.0

• Duration: 3.6 seconds

Non-lethal option – Punch

• Range: 1.0

• Noise Radius: 3.0

• Duration: 3 seconds

Skills

Isabelle Moreau is able to perform voodoo arts that enable her to possess the mind of an enemy. Once under the influence of Isabelle's Mind Control she can command the enemy to kill each other. The downside of this ability is that every time she casts the spell she must first wound herself which loses 1 health and she can only use it three times in a mission. Isabelle is also a herbalist who can use her stash of Jimson Weed to craft medicine to use on either herself or on an ally to heal. She can also use her dark arts to connect two enemies together so whatever fate befalls one enemy the other will suffer the same death at the same time irrespective of where they are. Isabelle has a faithful feline friend called stella who comes in useful as distraction technique.
