If you already play this F2P MMO then the fact that it landed at Number 3 is really no surprise to you -- heck you are probably wondering why it is not Number 1?!

Billed as the game that delivers a new age in competitive online gaming, League of Legends offers gamers what is arguably a fresh take on both strategy and role-playing game genres, offering a very finely tuned game play experience that permits solo play to be successful while rewarding group play in ways that will probably surprise you, as that is what they are meant to do.

Joining the game as a Summoner, you are equipped with a very distinct and fully-customizable avatar whose powers include calling forth and controlling a number of brave champions in battle. That sounds fine and you can accept that, but really, it fails to deliver the correct emphasis -- you see the character of your Summoner Avatar is not just set at the start! You actually continue to evolve it by unlocking new ranks and skills, as well as Achievements that allow you to further customize your character. This is really very cool!

In a way (please understand I am not saying it is actually identical) the play reminds me a lot of the Summoner in FFXI early in the game's history... What I mean by that is the feeling that you got in pleasure and accomplishment from calling forth your minion and kicking some major butt!

Considering that the basic power structure in this world is constantly shifting from side to side, and that every battle has some impact upon it, you will want to choose your faction and allies carefully, and you will want to be as effective in summoning your champions and sending them into battle as you can be. That sort of goes without saying, doesn't it?

There is a crafting system in the game (sort of) that allows you to take ordinary items and forge them into legendary items -- if you get the combination right. Choose right and the new item you create will boost your Summoner's powers!

The game is structured with an excellent matchmaking system, and encourages players to team up for team-vs-team battles, tournaments, and other organized official events. What is more there is a mechanism in the game that actually punishes quitters, which almost certainly guarantees that the players who start an event will remain to finish it - something we think ALL of the MMOs should have.

If you have the time -- and you will need time because one of the other unique aspects of this game is that your actual game play and persistence is part of what unlocks new game content -- you will easily find a new home for your competitive urges. Gather your mates, create your Summoner, just don't say we did not warn you that this is a very addictive game.
