If swords and sorcery is not your thing and you often find yourself saying to yourself, “Self, wouldn't it be great if there was a new free-to-play MMO that was set in a futuristic sci-fi world that totally embraces the shooter-style of play?” Yep, that would be Firefall!

This team-based MMO shooter has both PVE (standard MMO play) and PVP play (think Team Fortress) then take all of the different futuristic bits of tech like mech, armored units, a wide variety of weapons, throw them into a pail and mix it up, then dump it into a nearly post-apocalyptic version of a future earth, and you pretty much have the basic foundation of Firefall.

The underlying story involves this mysterious and very lethal force called The Melding, which has driven humanity near to extinction. The people who survive make use of the surviving tech to build special fighting units as well as weapons in order to resist the enemy.

The game is a quest-based MMO but it also features resource collection (you need the resources to start constructing custom weapons and mech units) so it really embraces the entire range of play styles. Put it this way, when you start out on foot with the standard assault weapons you can easily survive, but once you get into the better energy weapons, you almost dictate the terms of your battles in PvE and that is pretty cool...

Significant development has followed the closed beta so that the open game now fully supports class-based specialization, and class-modification pretty much on the fly. Gamers who played the original beta found the game to be a bit too easy, but we can happily say that is not something you will hear a lot with the game in its current full version deployment.

Grab a few mates, download the game, and start killing the bug-eyed monsters because why? Somebody has to save the earth and humanity you selfish buggers!
