08. Age of Wushu

Do you like games that are set in fantasy 3D worlds and that focus upon marital arts as their primary combat theme? How about games that are constantly updated, deliver fantastic holiday-themed events, and otherwise try to give the player something new to do each time that they play? Age of Wushu is one of those games.

Set during the Ming Dynasty of the Chinese feudal era, the players train in historic martial arts schools in a game play environment that is not restricted by class or level -- seriously, your characters will be able to master both martial arts and magical arts, and apply the knowledge that they have gained to their adventures no matter which house they belong to at Hogwartz!

OK, I was just kidding about the Hogwartz, but still, your characters are not locked into any restrictions either for the types of skills that they seek knowledge in or how you employ it. That is the theory anyway, though you should not be all that surprised when you end up following specific paths to power in the game. Just saying.

This was really a game that was made for gamers who saw Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and thought, man, wouldn't it be cool if I could do that? In an MMO? In a free-to-play MMO? With PvP? Yeah!

So the first stand-out feature of the game is a combination of the environment (the game world can be so stunning that you should no be surprised if you find yourself coming to a halt and just looking around). Then there is the very realistic human-like form of your character and their very cool armor. What?! Yeah. Add in your horse which will take you all over the land, which is really useful for completing the first few quests until you find your first school...

Considering that there is a separate school for each weapon type, as well as each martial arts discipline, and then each school may be part of a faction -- which can limit which you choose since obviously working with a “bad” faction can cost you points with your “good” faction school, just saying... Fortunately there are also neutral factions, if you are a middle of the road sort, and those allow you to dabble in both of the other two without punishing you!

If this does not sound exciting, well, at first the excitement comes from experiencing the newness of the game -- remember this is not a level-based MMO -- and while the tasks (quests) that you start out doing are not combat based, since you don't really HAVE the martial arts skills you need to do that sort of quests, that is actually a good thing!

Once you qualify to begin training in your first school the goals change to supporting that school (more quests) and acquiring the skills you will need later to do your thing. But fear not, you pick the skills you are working on, and you are always working on them, so progress is nearly automatic.

If you have mates who enjoy martial arts movies grab them, download the client, but first make sure you actually DO have sick days you can use at work, right?
