05. World of Tanks

You knew this would be on the list, right? And it is NOT because at E3 they keep bringing these classic World War II vintage tanks to decorate their collection of camo-clad booth babes (both male AND female booth babes, and I am NOT sure what exactly that says about the games industry). It is also not because they keep giving us swag bags with miniature toy tanks and dog tag jewelry (hint to WoT: next E3 think Chocolate Tanks)... No, it is because they really created a fun tank-filled combat adventure!

Not only did they create a rich and historic tank-focused combat MMO for the PC, but our experiences with the beta version of this free-to-play MMO on the Xbox 360 have left us convinced that these people mean to take over every aspect of entertainment. Period.

Of course when your game is loaded (heh, did you see that? I used “loaded” in an article about tanks?) with historically accurate fun, you also can choose to fight for the other side -- wait, if you can choose your side, are they actually the “other” side or are they now YOUR side? I am so confused!

The actual game is built using what are in reality a very complicated piece of military hardware, but thanks to the simplified controls and a relatively slow game pace (at first) pretty much anyone can get into the game and cut their teeth, even if you don't know the difference between a Tiger and a Stuart.

This is a shooter -- yes it has some heavy metal armored vehicles as its focal point but that changes nothing -- each of those iron and steel monsters has a big gun (and a few smaller ones) and the objective is pretty much the same you find in any shooter -- find the enemy before he finds you, and shoot him!

While the game was created to be a free-to-play MMO title, it does have some paid elements to it that you may very well find you want to take advantage of, depending upon just how “into” the game you end up getting. The money side of the game largely equates to saving time, not gaining an advantage over other players.

If you spend money to unlock a higher tier of tank -- something that a gamer who is more familiar with the abilities of different historical tanks may choose to do -- that does not give you an edge over other gamers who are still in lower tier (weaker) tanks, because the game is set up so that players are matched in play and battle with tanks of their own tier! Which if you think about it is a very spiffy thing indeed, since getting decapitated by a Tiger when you are rolling around in a T1 Cunningham would be, well, unfortunately explosive.

Don't take our word for it -- if you are a fan of World War II shooters, try this different take on the typical shooter and see what you think?
