I got the game a few days ago and currently just kidnapped Ashe and am in the Westersand.
 
 Here are my people and what they do. I'm looking for recommendations on how they should be set.
 
 PLEASE DONT PUT ANY FUTURE EVENTS IN YOUR ANSWER. If I should train Penelo, I don't want to know why.
 
 Vaan lvl 22 All around sorta person, lots of magic, and fighter gear, I use him as my leader for the most part and it's nice to be able to do anything
 
 Basch lvl 22 (1814 hp), Fighter who basically wails on things til they die.
 
 Ashe lvl 22 (Looks like Yuna) uses a blade, but has every white magic liscence and many other magic ones (Training her to be a mage)
 
 Those are my main 3
 
 Balthier 16 (his gun bugs me) I rarely use him except when forced, he has a lot LP to use, but is just a sorta all around at the moment, basic everything
 
 Fran 19 More my 4th option, uses a javelin and basic magic, also has a lot of LP
 
 Penelo 1500 LP lvl 21. Just got her. Never used her, dunno what to make her.

Firstly... I want to say that you are very wrong if you under estimate girls power :D Penelo, Ashe and Fran can be very usefull because eventhough they don't have much HP like all the guys, but they have lots of MP... And it's very usefull during great battle, because you'll find that when you battle Espers or Bosses, magic and quickening are VERY IMPORTANT! I suggest that you train Van, Ashe, Fran, and Penelo a lot more. Van with 1H sword or 2H sword (actually 1H sword is better for him because he can use a shield too), Penelo with Axe or Pole, Ashe and Fran with Bows! Of'course you also have to train Basch and Balthier since you have to had back-up team. Get two best warrior and 1 white mage in you first team (i suggest Vaan, Penelo, and Ashe - those three are more quicker than the other) and the rest for back-up. Try to level up at least 10 more than your actual level in every episode.

First, Your approach is all wrong, sure you want to use each character to be best at what they do but, you want them to be able to do everything not just 1 thing. You'll need this later in the game. Try to keep all characters relatively even in levels and keep them all with pretty much same magics tecnicks and good armor accessories and weapons trust me it helps ALOT later in the game.

I thought I would add that my 3 main ppl Basch, Vaan, Ashe are lvl 39. Everyone else is lvl 20.

I just did all the Mt.Oshi whatever.

Ashe has covered the magick part of the board and is now into augments
Vaan has done all augments and is now learning all magic
Basch is special and has learned all augments, technicks and accessories (felt like uncovering that area.

It works for me. Except against the stupid monsters that constantly cast blind and are on lvl 50. BAH!
