Before too long, you will end up with the police chasing you. Once this happens, you can determine just how rigorous their chase is going to be by the number of badges in the top left-hand corner of the screen, by the map. In order to lose the police, you either have to hide, or locate the special badges to collect on the map. Once the badges on the left are grey, the police cannot see you any more. Eventually, if you stay hidden for long enough, they disappear completely.
The best way to lose the police without having to find badges is to get to the beach - they are not very good when driving around water. Pull up somewhere they can't easily get to and wait for the heat to die down. Similarly, if you find a hard-to-access piece of road, parkland or hill, you can often use it as an inaccessible place where the police will usually lose you.
This is not as much of a cheat as it sounds, but most players don't realize that you can actually buy health and ammo during missions. In fact, whenever you want. While the game has ammo stores, which makes it look like you should only be able to stock up on medicine and supplies there, you can also do it by using the in game menu. Tap the map, then the Shops icon at the bottom of the screen, and you will have access to heaps of ammo and health. Bear in mind you still have to be a high enough level to use the item, and have it in your arsenal in the first place.
Using this tip you should never really die during Gangstar Rio.
Similar to the above tip, you can get a vehicle to spawn on or near you by purchasing it in the Store via the map screen. Once you have purchased a vehicle once, you don't need to do so again, and can just spawn it on your location whenever you like. Helicopters, planes and boats will spawn at the nearest available location suitable for them.
The races in Gangstar Rio can be tough, as the AI don't seem to have to break. They are also more than willing to ram you. However, most of the time if you just stay clear of trouble they will often allow you to catch up even if you've made mistakes and spun out, for example. In the more novel vehicles, like boats and jet skis, the AI is not so adept, and you will likely be able to win more comfortably.
