It did take about a year before I got to ride him, there's not alot more you can do for him. :)

It took me up to summer 3 for the Dolphin to get one heart.It would take you to the island to catch more fish though.

If you give it three fish a day only one counts so don`t give it all your fish(or any villager more than one gift)because it won`t matter and you can wave at it by pressing A at the dock when it`s there.
