Traits are the physical features and personalities each Sim possess which makes them unique. Even identical twins have differences. Each playable household Sim starts with one trait by default and whenever you do an interaction with a Sim that has a trait that matches you will be rewarded with bonuses such as Llife Experience which will enable you to unlock additional slots to add more traits. The maximum of number of traits you can assign to a single Sim is four. Once assigned, traits and their levels are permanent. When slots for all four traits have been unlocked, further Life Experience will count toward unlocking Retirement.
Not all the traits are available to choose from the start and will need to be unlocked using heirlooms before you can assign them to a Sim. Many heirlooms can also be used to improve traits. All traits regardless of what they are have three levels which will have a star rating. The 1-star trait gives the smallest benefit whilst the 3-star gives the highest. The only way traits can be levelled up is by collecting the silver (uncommon) and gold (rare) trait heirlooms and once levelled up will affect all the Sims that you have assigned that trait.
