Added:

There are different ways of playing mid during the laning phase, all of which depend on the hero being played. When using a ranged hero, chip away at the health of the enemy counterpart. If your hero has good base damage and attack animation, you can also focus on adding last hitting and denying to your to do list. Finally, if the ranged hero you’re playing has Burst Damage spells, whittle away at the enemy’s health and finish the hero with a spell. Likewise, you can also use spells to severely hurt the enemy so that they would have to play from a safe distance. This makes last hitting and denying easier while the opponent will have less experience.

At this point, the enemy might consider asking his team mates to assist them. They can do this by trying to gank your hero, or make it a 2-on-1 battle at mid. If a hero is missing from the map and has slows, Burst Damage, or disables, expect a gank and do not play too aggressively. If you are playing without vision, be mindful of the enemy’s movement. If they are too forward or too aggressive, back away immediately. If they do go for a 2-on-1 game with a support constantly harassing your hero, this is still a win. The mid hero is getting only half of the experience, and the other lane becomes less dangerous because it is now one enemy hero short.

When the lane is not working out for your hero, try to get as much as you can. This is often the case when an enemy hero has good harassing capabilities or when it’s a melee versus range matchup. When this happens, use nukes to get last hits and don’t force your hero to get last hits. Stay in experience range to get your ultimate at a timely manner. If the safelane hero can survive with one less support helping them, call for help. If you are playing as 2 in the mid, make sure the enemy hero gets less experience by zoning them out and denying creeps. Also keep an eye on the enemy hero’s mana pool. By calculating their mana and knowing the spells they can cast, you can anticipate if they have any killing potential.
