Top 10 Best Games of 2014

1. Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

So at this point the best game of 2014 should probably be obvious just based on what hasn't appeared on the list yet. Apparently 2014 was the year of the Wii U. I never would have expected a Wii U title to be the best game of 2014 back at the beginning of the year but here we are. Super Smash Bros. for Wii U was the highest reviewed game for consoles on Metacritic for 2014 not counting re-releases like Grand Theft Auto V on next-gen consoles or The Last of Us: Remastered which I didn't take into consideration for inclusion on this list anyway.

Like Hearthstone, one of the reasons Super Smash Brothers is such a successful game is that it is fun for casual gamers but can also be played competitively at the highest levels. As the old saying goes, it's easy to learn but difficult to master. That gives it wide reaching as well as long lasting appeal.

The new Super Smash Bros. has the largest roster of playable characters in franchise history along with new items, new maps, and improvements to the game mechanics. There's also a 3DS version that has some unique features.

Super Smash Bros. is fun for all ages and for both franchise veterans and newcomers to the series alike. Although it was very close between this and Hearthstone, I think the new Super Smash Bros. was the best game to be released in 2014.
