Top 10 Best Game Reveals Of The 2014 Summer

3. Bloodborne

It's time to get serious. Bloodborne is the real deal. Developer From Software is doing the impossible by taking the Dark Souls franchise and improving on the model in yet another way. That's rather incredible, given how prestigious their prior games have been.

Bloodborne is completely the same as Dark Souls, but without all the things that it had to sacrifice to make better games. It would be possible to substitute the prior phrase with the term 'on crack/on acid,' but that wouldn't give enough credit to how clever the subtle changes are in altering the entire dynamic of the hardcore roleplaying game. While previous Souls iterations were slower, to force players to commit to their actions, Bloodborne removes most of its sluggishness and instead increases the risk and reward factor.

Now, rather than blocking and waiting out patterns, mobs need to be thinned out efficiently. Blocking is replaced altogether with the use of a firearm that stuns when used with the proper timing. The idea is the same, but now it requires a player's active and skillful input. Alternatively, characters will need to dodge and time hits, which centers gameplay more on positioning. To further focus on proper battle awareness, players will be able to regain health from enemies, but only for a limited time, enforcing a good strategy to mow through a swarm in a certain path. This also hinders mindless slashing, as fighters would take too much damage to make up for gains. Again: It's pretty damn clever.

And yes, Bloodborne will be presented in that muted, dying landscape that comes with every Souls release. Foggy cobblestone streets provide tight quarters for extra tense fights. Littered dust, dirt and humidity, paired with dying vegetation and discarded rubble, make the Victorian locales appear teeming with disease. Even the enemies of the game go all-out to represent this sickly, sophisticated tone, as farmer mobs with torches approach the player in true Frankenstein style, alongside dead aristocrats with top hats. Then there's the developer's penchant for absolutely terrifying abominations. Bloodborne is going to depressing. Bloodborne is going to be hard. Bloodborne is going to be great.
