Top 10 Best Game Reveals Of The 2014 Summer

8. Dragon Quest: Heroes

For some reason, multiple companies are turning towards Koei Tecmo's expertise. Their Dynasty Warriors franchise is hot and everyone wants a piece of the pie. Suddenly, a flagship like Pokémon is used to make a turn-based strategy game on Nintendo DS. Hyrule Warriors has taken Zelda and made it into the most satisfying slasher that Link and friends have ever been in. Now, Dragon Quest: Heroes will use the latter model to also reskin Dynasty Warriors as the beloved Square Enix roleplaying game (RPG).

Why is this a good idea? Arguably, Hyrule Warriors and Dragon Quest: Heroes wouldn't be that far apart. While that's true, there are some arguments to come back for this version of another 'musou' brawler that randomly trounces massive hordes of enemies. For one, Zelda's adventure was on Nintendo Wii U, but Dragon Quest: Heroes will actually depart from that stable and return to Playstation on PS4 and PS3. This would be the first time since the gorgeous eighth iteration of the franchise that we would see it come back.

Additionally, Dragon Quest: Heroes will use characters from all over its series, meaning that you'll have a chance to catch up with people you might've missed out on earlier. Most importantly, that last factor also applies to the cutesy monster cast that the past games have spawned, from its iconic blue slimes to huge Cyclopes. Using this array of enemies is doubly effective. On one hand, their more individual models help create a more varied playing field, while, secondly, their saccharine color tones bring more life to the musou style otherwise somewhat lacking in contrast.

Dragon Quest: Heroes is also one of the first times that we can see the static RPG genre get transformed into something a lot more dynamic, as fights are in real time and include tons more opponents than usual. To top it off, those captured special moves that characters can pull off look stunning; effortlessly flinging a few dozen enemies into the air. If excitement for the game can be this high for something only announced in Japan, so far, a localization announcement will surely follow soon.
