Top 10 Best Game Reveals Of The 2014 Summer

9. Shape Up

It's rare to see motion controls really capture an audience on-stage at a convention. In earlier years, where companies were still trying to sell their accessories quite hard, many tried to show exactly why that particular project was the best, but few managed to spark an interest. In the case of Shape Up, however, the fact that it doesn't care that it looks goofy makes it that much more appealing.

Shape Up uses workouts to keep people active, but it transports its players to a wacky augmented reality arcade stage to do exercises. It knows that something like a workout can be boring and that this dreary mentality can ultimately kill the drive to do it. Therefore, it uses intense visual stimulation to keep a person's eyes and brain occupied, while players put in all the work necessary to get fitter. It's not that far removed from more outlandish 'Start to Run' apps or fitness helpers on mobile phones, which have proven to be quite successful.

Different body areas are tackled with a series of specific mini-games. For instance, a stage show showed off two people trying to compete for most pushups, while virtual items like cars, elephants and whales were thrown on their backs. Bringing the game closer to its rhythmic roots, there was also a stationary running game that resembled a mix between Guitar Hero, with the necessary inputs from the classic Dance Dance Revolution. It's essentially the fun party game mold from beloved titles like Mario Party, but in a shell where staying on the couch while eating pizza is not an option for once.

Really the only problem that Shape Up has right now is public perception. Kinect and augmented reality games are still seen as a frivolous item and there's no denying that this is as silly as it gets. Still, that's its biggest quality. It's a good thing that it doesn't take itself seriously. It just wants to help people stay fit, while entertaining them with an extremely colorful game at the same time. Fitness is hard enough as it is, it can use a bit of laughter. Laughter is healthy, right?
