Sims don't die on the Freeplay. They'll just be totally uninspired when you get home

No, but when you see them again they may. Need a lot of attention regaining health. Muffins or LP are quick fixes.

Yes Sims can and will die under certain conditions. They are a race programmed to succeed. For instance I went to
Europe over Christmas to see my uncle. I was gone a month. Upon my return, one of the female Sims, Kelly, had murdered the other 7 Sims and eaten them for food. A morbid find upon arriving home, but at least I still had one Sim from which to continue the race.
