Starter Pokemon

Latest update by CMBF on Nov 28th 2012

With each new Pokemon game one of the first pieces of information that Gamefreak reveals in the build-up to release is information about the starter Pokemon -- the three Pokemon that you will be able to choose from as you begin your adventure. Since the traditional system in the games for each generation is to release a complimentary two-color set, then follow that with a third title that ties both of the games together, with Gen V the formula was altered, with Pokemon Black 2 and White 2 appearing as direct sequels to the first pair rather than tying them together.

Because of that, the choice was made to use the same starter Pokemon as the previous games, so you will once again have the choice between Oshawott, Snivy, and Tepig.

Oshawott

Oshawott is a Water-type "Otter" Pokemon that evolves into Samurott at Level 36. While the Water-type is not the strongest of Pokemon battle-wise at first, it does grow into its power as it levels-up, and once it evolves into Samurott it becomes a very well-rounded and powerful Pokemon.

Snivy

Snivy is a Grass-type "Snake" Pokemon that evolves into Serperior at Level 36. The best stat that Serperior offers is its Speed Stat, which makes it first-in on most battles, but as it is better used as a defensive Pokemon, when you choose it as your starter you will need to plan your team to have another designated DD battler.

Tepig

Tepig is a Fire-type "Pig" Pokemon that evolves into Emboar at Level 36, and is the most popular choice for most players in that it is powerful early on and continues to grow more powerful as you progress.

Of the three, Oshawott/Samurott has the best overall application in the Gym Battles and battle with the Elite Four, with Tepig/Emboar only slightly behind it. Snivy/Serperior is at a disadvantage for a lot of the Gym battles but can still be effectively used as long as you have type-strong team members in your team.
