46: Giant Chasm

The Giant Chasm is a special place only because it is the home to our next Legendary Pokemon -- an interesting one called Kyurem, one of the handful of Legendary Pokemon in the game that have a very localized weather effect in whatever area they happen to be in.  The fact that it is a Legendary Pokemon is reason enough to want to capture it, but this one actually looks pretty cool, which is bonus reason for working your way through the complicated path to its capture!

So, from the steps head down and enter the cave opening, and the first thing you will notice is that your Dowser goes ding!  Yeah, there are treasures here!  There are also Pokemon you may not have yet, and Pokemon you absolutely do not have yet -- so we will be doing a fair bit of trolling while we are here...

In addition to the Legendary Pokemon, this area has another significant presence in the form of the very amazing Ditto -- a Pokemon that is simply invaluable to any Trainer who also plans to be a breeder -- even if they are only dabbling in the science of breeding!  Ditto allows you to breed when you are missing one of the sexes, or when the Pokemon being bred is asexual.

So the first thing that we want to do is concentrate upon capturing all of the Pokemon we do not yet have in our dex.  Next you want to concentrate on capturing three different Ditto, with each having a unique nature.  The reason for that is because the nature of a Pokemon is what dictates what other natures it will breed with, so you need to have several available in case the Pokemon you try to breed Ditto with does not like one or more of the natures, so that you have one that it will breed with.  Having lots of options is a good thing :)

Following the Dowser to the left and down a short set of stairs to the ledge here gets us a Big Mushroom from the rock here, and then we continue to the west, pushing a boulder into a hole and grabbing a Star Piece form the treasure ball down the narrow cut here.

Following the very long passage north along the west side eventually dings the Dowser, getting  us a TinyMushroom from a rock on the side of the wall -- then we head east and push a boulder into a hole to score a Star Piece from the treasure ball there.

Following the Dowser east gets us another TinyMushroom from a rock in an alcove on the south side of the path, then we push another boulder into another hole, gaining access to a treasure ball with a Comet Shard in it.

In the northeast corner there are two paths south we can take --  the far path over a ledge or the inner path and Surf -- for now take the outer path and walk, don't Surf, to the bottom, where we find a boulder that needs to go in a hole!

Surf north and hop on to the path to the west, following that south and west to the stairs and go down, exiting the first cave area to the outside.

The Giant Chasm

-- Outside Area --

A Max Elixir is obtained from the treasure ball to the immediate left of the entrance to this area, and another treasure ball with a Max Potion is found to the north, then continue all the way to the north to get a Revive from another treasure ball.  A Carbos is in a treasure ball to the south and east of the last one.

A little south and east from here is another ball with TM13, Ice Beam, and then head south to get a Full Heal from another ball.  Head south and then work your way west towards where we entered the area to find a treasure ball with TM03, Psyshock, that is worth the effort of grabbing!

In the far southeast corner of the area is a treasure ball with a Max Revive.  That wraps up the treasure balls for this area, so go ahead and work your way down to the south then west and north to very near the center of the area, where you will find a drained pond that, when you enter it, will trigger a massive weather change blanketing the area in snow and removing the trees!

Now you can head north to the stairs and enter the cave to have yourself a battle with a Legendary Pokemon.  Basically you treat this like any other encounter -- you weaken him and then throw balls until you get lucky and capture him.

Once you have all of the Pokemon for this area that you need to catch and the Legendary, you simply need to Fly to the Pokemon Center in Lacunosa Town to heal and save!
