Unlike other versions apart of the Fire Emblem Series, Echoes abandons the rock-paper-scissors weapon effectiveness triangle, converting and simplifying things back down to a damage calculator based on the difference between Attack and Defense (Physical Attacks) and Attack and Resistance (Magic Attacks). Basic combat is unchanged otherwise, playing out in a series of attack and counters between units.
Units can continue to gain temporary stat boosts during combat through a Support System, but the feature allowing two units to pair up on a single tile has since been removed. Support stat increases are now only granted to two units who are standing next to each other after having a conversation of the battlefield, and these boosts between units are permanent. The more conversations two units have over the course of the game, the higher the stat buffs (up to a given point).
