It is a common belief that nothing comes for free. And for those who want to invest in a stronger Army, spending a few resources would be required. In the game, Mercenaries are available for recruitment in exchange for a few Trade Goods.

Another way to get some Mercenaries are from clearing forests and hiring the Mercenaries you find upon clearing a forest. In order to recruit Mercenaries, you will need to build a Mercenary Camp first. Upgrading your Mercenary Camp also upgrades the number of Mercenaries you can hire.

Once your Mercenaries have been deployed in battle, they will no longer return even if you have destroyed all Defensive Buildings. So make sure they last in battle longer. To make your Mercenaries stronger and more durable, make sure to research the “Free Companies” Technology from the Library.

Hittite Warriors

These fighters are excellent against buildings and cavalry and deliver stronger hits than the common soldier.

Assyrian Horse Raiders

These fighters are perfect for when you would need strong atackers against resource buildings and when you require loot and resources.

Greek Javelineer

These mercenaries are best used when getting rid of enemy troops during a raid. They have very low hitpoints so be sure to deploy them with troops with high hitpoints and other defenses.

Persian Heavy Cavalry

These fighters are equivalent to your normal heavy cavalry as it is blessed with high hitpoints and is perfectly tough against catapults and Defensive Buildings. The only drawback is that this fighter deals quite a low amount of damage.

Hun Warrior

The Hun Warrior are perfect fighters to add to your Army if you are someone who wants to first deal with enemy foot troops first. These warriors deal faster damage than the normal soldiers. They have very low hitpoints so it is best to protect them with proper defenses.

Steppe Horse Raider

These fighters are perfect against destroying resource buildings faster since they are able to deliver triple the amount of damage against resource buildings. Their prime weaknesses are enemy troops so be sure to deploy them away from Defensive Buildings and troops or perhaps deploy them once all defensive buildings have been eradicated.

War Elephant

These fighters are perfect to use when engaging with strong and plentiful troops since these troops are highly tough with a very high amount of hitpoints. Their main weaknesses, however, are ballista towers and spike traps so be sure to keep them away from those during battle. One main problem of these troops would be their mediocre amount of damage against resource buildings.

Chinese Hand Cannon

These Mercenaries are your best bet when you would want to get rid of enemy troops quickly for the cannons they wield give quite a strong amount of damage against enemy troops. These troops are weak against Defensive Buildings and cavalry and have low hitpoints.

Templar Knight

These Mercenaries will prove worth your money as they are tough (with hitpoints of up to 6,545) and they are very strong against those pesky catapults that are quite a bother during a raid. These people, however, are extremely vulnerable to ballista towers and deal very low damage.

Ronin

These fighters make legends come to life as they prove themselves as worthy investments with their powerful damage against building and cavalry. These fighters, however, are extremely weak against foot troops and mortars and have a small amount of hitpoints.

Condottieri Raider

When you are in desperate need for resources, then hiring these fighters are the solution as they provide double damage against resource buildings and have a decent amount of hitpoints. These troops are highly vulnerable against enemy troops so be sure to pair them with fighters and defenders that have high hitpoints or are durable.

Mahout

Using height to their advantage, these elephant-riders are very tough with their high hitpoints. Their strength is contrasted with their vulnerability to ballista towers and spike traps so be mindful to deploy them away from those.

Tercious

As you move up to a more advanced age, it is important to match it with fighters that can advance through time as well. These musketeers, with their strong attacks, are perfect against enemy troops but are highly vulnerable to Defensive Buildings and cavalry. The challenge for these fighters are their very low hitpoints.

Hessian Cavalry

These fighters recognize the power of speed as they use it to their advantage with their fast-moving attacks against mortars. Aside from that, these troops have very high hitpoints so having them in your Army would be ideal and definitely worth every penny.

Gurkha

As a city grows, an Army should advance as well. The Gurkhas are perfect against buildings and cavalry but are very vulnerable against catapults and redoubts. Their strong attacks are contrastingly matched by their low hitpoints.

Bedouin Raider

During a raid, loots are actually one of the best rewards. So when it comes to dealing with resources, having the Bedoin Raider on your side is ideal for they provide three times the amount of damage against resource buildings. Despite their quick and powerful attacks against resource buildings, these fighters are quite susceptible against heavy defenses and these fighters are not also blessed with a lot of hitpoints to begin with so it is recommended to position them away from heavy defenses and artillery.

Flammpanzer

For any Army, a tank serves as an undeniable gem and in the game, these tanks are definitely worth the investment as they provide massive damage and are revered with extremely high amounts of hitpoints. These tanks, however, are not as effective when used to battle other tanks and against walls so it is best to set up these tanks against enemy foot troops and Defensive Buildings.
