His backstory mainly revolves around his personal growth as a character. He had to overcome several obstacles right from the starting point until the end. You probably felt bad for him when he realized he had a fake ticket, right? It is quite evident that he lacks faith in himself and is afraid to cast his black magic to save his friend. However, as the story goes on, his personality developed, and he is turned into a brave and self-confident character. Vivi is an overall cool character, and his Black Magic basically makes Final Fantasy IX much easier than it could be.
