Top 10 1st Generation Competitive Pokemon
Clefable
And here we are... The #1 first generation Pokemon at the present time: Clefable.
Clefable might look soft and fluffy, but it's a sheer monster. In battle, it makes Gengar look like the good one.
The meer sight of Clefable makes trainers coward in fear. Everytime I see one in my opponent's team, the only thing I can think of is "Oh... Fudge..." (But not with that nice of language, if you know what I mean).
Clefable can will either have the ability Unaware or Magic Guard.Unaware allows Clefable to enter battle without having to worry about a Pokemon that has used Power Boost Moves. This, along with moves like Cosic Power and Calm Mind, allow Clefable to withstand many blows. In addition to this, Clefable has access to Softboiled and Moonlight, allowing it to regain health. Just when you think this Pokemon only has status moves, it unleashes a vicious Moon Blast or Stored Power to destroy teams. The same goes for Magic Guard Clefable. But instead of ignoring opponent stat boosts, it doesn't take damage from status moves. Either way, you're in for trouble with this thing.
The only thing scarier than Clefable is the thought of a possible Mega Clefable... But that, at the moment, is only found in PokeNightmares.

Conclusions and Team Recommendations!
The first generation of Pokemon will always bring nostalgic memories to heart to all PokeGamers, and sometimes that overrules wise competitive decisions.
As more generations of Pokemon came to be, many of the Pokemon found in the classic first generation became outcalssed. Some were able to prevail because of overall good stats, while others needed a good ability or hidden ability to become relevant again.
At this point in time (the sixth generation), less than twenty-five first generation Pokemon (not including their Mega Evolutions) are really found in competitive play (unless you stick to lower tier play). However, a few handful of first generation have become powerhouses.
Here are some team recommendations for the Pokemon found in this article:
10) Gyarados - Really is only found in teams not using Talonflame in order to defeat Blaziken, which is really where it should be. Talonflame, at this point, is really the better overall choice.
9) Cloyster - Not really seen much in teams. It's still a reliable option, but it does take some setting up. Some trainers aren't willing to do that, while others see the potential.
8) Tentacruel - Still a popular choice among all generations, due to its ability to avoid toxic and HP draining moves. If you want a reliable spinner, Tentacruel should always be an option.
7) Weezing - Unfortunately for Weezing, Skarmory exists. Skarmory is usually the better choice, but if you'd like a change or a surprise, Weezing is a great option.
6) Machamp - Much like Weezing and Gyarados, Machmap has been outclass. It is still seen sometimes as a lead Pokemon, but normally trap layers take his spot.
5) Nidoking - Have you noticed the common theme of these first generation Pokemon being outclassed by other, newer Pokemon? Well, that continues here. Darmanitan is the better choice over Nidoking, having more power behind its Sheer Force. Nidoking is still strong, but not as much when compared to Darmanitan.
4) Ditto - If you play competitive play, you should always have Ditto. I cannot tell you how many times I've suckered someone into stat boosts and then sending out Ditto to destroy their entire team.
3) Chansey - Yes, Yes, a thousand times Yes! Chansey is one of the many rare Pokemon that are better than their final evolutions, and for good reason too. Chansey is in my top five most annoying Pokemon out there, which should be good enough to get it into your team.
2) Dragonite - Yeah... The top four Pokemon in this article should always be an option when building your team, and that includes this powerhouse. If I may say, I'd go with Weakness Policy Dragonite. Nothing better than surprising the opponent into a bait to ruin their entire team.
1) Clefable - No doubt. Have this beast in your team. Unaware Clefable? Awesome. Magic Guard Clefable? Even better.

Please remember that this article focuses on these Pokemon during the Sixth Generation of the series, and these rankings are solely based upon personal opinion from numerous battle experiences. This article will also exclude Legendary Pokemon and Mega Evolution, since they're in a class all of their own.
Hey, great article. Just wondering if you have a top 10 list for each generation? And possibly a top 10 list overall, comparing the top 10 from each generation?

Ummmm... Where is Gengar? He's been in OU since RBY, and has always been a top tier threat with it's great movepool and beastly stats. Heck, even his Mega was banned into Ubers. Also, if we're talking Gen 6, Kangaskhan, Charizard, and Pidgeot deserve a spot.
Also, talking frailty as a fault of Alakazam, then instantly bring up Gyarados and Cloyster.
-_-
gyrados deserves #1. Everyone must have a gyrados as water type unless their starter is water type.
Not impressed much by the list....Gyarados at 10? Pretty sure it should be at least in the top 5. Ditto? Most. Predictable. Thing. Ever. Maybe it was cool before team previews, but now it's easily planned for during battle. And while cloyster is OK as a shell smash sweeper, I find omastar does a bit of a better job at doing so (better coverage movepool, doesn't get completely walled by steel type due to moves like scald/surf and earth power).
And the legends & megas technically aren't in a league of their own. Articuno and Moltres got demolished when gen 4 came around and introduced the mortal enemy of bird-kind, stealth rock. Of course, Mewtwo is a different story...

what about nidoqueen is she worth it
oh and for the record garados is sopposed to be on here its no surprise to anyone-.-
Eh, all you people do realize that this list IS about gen 1 pokemon, right? I see people mentioning gen 2, 3 and 4 pokemon and someone complaining it's too much gen 1. I suggest you guys read the title of the list first.
first off i dont agree with the person who posted this sure some pokemon here belong on here but some dont
Why you don't mention pikachu cause he is very, very a trillion times very courageous
because pikachu is garbage (esp in competitive)
Chansey can evolve into Blissy, high hp softboiled and can know moves like mega punch or hyper beam, but not even a mention to Garbachomp, Tyranitar or Metagross. This list is too biased by a G1 Trainer.
dude, read the title
No mention of Gengar or Starmie? Feel like someone slipped a bit here.
