10 More Games that Deserve a Sequel

3. Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine

A lot of games suffer from receiving their spotlight at the wrong time. New, unheard enterprises in particular struggled with being sent out during console transitional phases. As well as Space Marine could connect to the Warhammer 40,000 lore and the cult following of Games Workshop in general, it never soared as high as it deserved.

Yet, a lot of subtleties strengthened the resolve of this third person shooter. In a time where Gears of War had blocked any progress in the genre, every effort had become a shooting gallery. Infamous chest-high walls and other cover systems had grinded gameplay to a static affair. Who else but Warhammer, the inspiration for Gears, could solve this issue? Through leading by example, Space Marine did away with latching cover and easy resting periods in general. Marines would either take in a location well, move forward to eliminate immediate threats or die. There was no easy option.

Taking matters further, its health regeneration was balanced on a tough risk and reward system that forced an up-close battle, where life was already endangered. Differing enemy types would also present themselves on multiple tiers, creating a dynamic puzzle element where certain units would need to be taken out, prior to others. When all parties were rushing for a marine's throat, prioritizing was no easy task.

To top it off, its multiplayer didn't lob in a lazy rush job by just following the gravitas necessary in the campaign. Instead, multiple classes could play their distinct role in team-based assaults with tons of movement, action-packed like any self-respecting game with this lore should be. Unfortunately, however, no one outside of its fan base cared for revolutionary ideas in the shooter design, certainly not while awaiting the new consoles. Following more issues with the developer and publisher of Space Marine, a sequel became nigh impossible.

Recently, Games Workshop has gone ballistic and has thrown its properties to any studio willing to whore itself out. It would be wise to return to its strengths with a new chapter in the Space Marine saga. There's no time like the present.
