10 More Games that Deserve a Sequel

5. Dark Chronicle

It seems that big studios drifting away from their earlier ideas are a theme, because developer Level-5 has abandoned a few masterpieces in its time. This house has been busy since its inception, spawning series such as Professor Layton, Inazuma Eleven and Yo-Kai Watch, which is one of the hottest items in Japan right now. More one-off ventures have been sprinkled around its history. For example, Rogue Galaxy and its streamlined action could've been a great pick here as well. Still, it's the company's very first project and the house it tried to build there that should return.

Dark Chronicle was born from a valiant effort in Dark Cloud. While lacking in expertise on a few bits, the latter example showed that Level-5 was capable of producing their own line of games. This venture tried to connect the liberator aspect to literally reconstructing the homes of its citizens, through a builder sim element. These people needed a savior, but also a carpenter and a mason!

With the Dark Chronicle sequel, which was also known as a less inspired Dark Cloud 2, Level-5 buffed out some flaws and replaced those with some of the most content a game has ever seen. Let's break this one down: Aside from real-time combat in procedurally generated dungeons with crafted, customized weapons and multiple characters, the RPG retained city building, added an invention system, boosted upgrades, had a sweet killer robot ride and allowed for monster transformation. Not satisfied yet, cleared dungeons became fishing grounds to catch, raise and ultimately put fishes in contests. Additionally, these empty areas became impromptu golf courses. And the best part was that this excess clicked, as the core element held focus, while all the rest was there for those who wanted more. It's an unparalleled feat.

Level-5 may have turned to compressing ideas these days, but it can still craft plenty of magical worlds, such as Ni No Kuni or Fantasy Life. Maybe it could bless the Playstation 4 with a grand resurrection of Dark Chronicle as well. Its scope would be tremendous. And, hey, maybe that could launch another lucrative franchise.
